Coldest You'll Walk Your Dogs/Let Them Out?

Mine want out, no matter how cold it is. When it gets close to 0F or below, they are out only long enough to do their business and then back in. Of course, they do want out multiple times. I can stand at my back door or kitchen window and watch them. I don't walk my dogs, just because it is too hard to do with three and also because of the salt that is used on the sidewalk. I have some who do lick their feet. Boots are not an answer with them. Then again our weather can be above freezing one day and cold the next. What I have to watch for is a wind chill with the wind coming in off the lake - this can get quick brisk.
 
Some days I feel like I'm Hanna's personal doorman. In, out, in, out, in….need to pee, nope too cold, let me in…I really need to pee, can't, let me in… :gaah
 
I do walk the dogs in -5C or lower, but we don't get snow here. With them having arthritis I have found it better to keep moving. I think when they stop moving the cold seeps through to Deska's elbows and he stiffens right up and wants to be picked up. I guess it's like us walking on hot surfaces, if you could moving you don't notice how how it is. Also really important is to warm up the joint before going into the cold, because it ain't going to warm up once you're in the cold.
 
I like this thread -- just looking at the locations of the responders. We are having a heat/dry spell in CA. I wore a tank top today as my foothill home is above the inversion layer. It was about 55 degrees. Can we have some of the water? We have NO pasture re-growth as of yet and the livestock (mostly horses) all over the area have taken to getting out in search of food. Not my goats/llamas though, we have our animal/pasture ratio spot on. Keep warm everyone!
 
I'm with Mom2Melli! It has been ridiculously warm here this year. I'm pretty sure we will have winter, but if we blink, we might miss it. We've had about a rain storm and a half all winter. Feeling like a lizard with the dryness.

Wish we could pass on to you all some of our warm temps...love to have a few days in the 50s or 60s....
 
I don't mind the cold - I just watch the dogs feet and ears when I have them out. I find that if it is colder, there is less sickness around.
 
My dogs love the cold weather! Dusty likes to roll in the snow and bury his face in it :lol: Its been really cold here and Monday night thru Wednesday, its going to be the coldest temps on record in over 20 years. :eek2: But I am sure mine will still want to go run around and play.
 
Seriously tho, unless it's a severe medical condition I can never imagine letting my dog pee/poop inside the house on a pad... cuz it's too cold to do your business outside. Ever!! Personally, I think it's ridiculous for all dogs, but especially for Shelties, they can handle the cold for a few minutes for sure!

Sure you don't leave them out by themselves in the yard, just bundle yourself up, and let the dog go do his/her business!
haha, of course I have trained mine to go when I say go pee... it does make it easier in minus 20 lol

Totally agree. All you could see of me this a.m. was my eyes. Shelties were originally bred for harsh conditions, they weren't inside dogs like all of ours are now. If you go out with them you will see when they are ready to go in. Mine always let me know when they've had enough. Keep warm everyone.
