Chris I'm so very sorry you have to take such a drastic measure but you do whatever it takes to save your boy! My thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and the Colonel.
 
Crapola I was afraid of that. Do you remember Trini went through this with Sketch? She might have some good insights. At least a hind leg is not as much weight bearing as the front, and as there is no metastasis, you are saving his life. All the same I am very sorry to hear this. My heart goes out to you big-time. :hugsWe are here for you.

Prayers and gentle hugs to the Colonel! When are they planning to do the surgery?

Just me... but I would get a second opinion with this severe of a surgery.

I just had the wind knocked out of me! I can’t imagine how terrible you feel with this News.
 
I didn't undergo an amputation with Gavin, but he is effectively a tripod now.
Once Beckon has recovered, I have lots of ideas and experience on how to deal with an older dog with mobility issues.

I know Trini had some extensive posts on the recovery.....
and please post during the weeks of recovery, it helped me tons (emotionally) and served as a log so I could look back and see what happened when.

Yes, as Sharon mentioned my Sketchie lost a rear leg to bone cancer...he is now 4 and a half years post amp and still doing well at almost 13 years old. His cancer was Fibrosarcoma, he didn't have post op chemo...there had been no spread and the surgery alone was a total cure. I am deeply sorry that Beckon will lose a leg, but truly once past the initial weeks post surgery he will be a happy boy who will be able to do almost everything he could do with 4 legs. I have sent you a PM.

Sadly, just removing the mass requires retesting by a veterinary oncologist. He/she would do the surgery, but that treatment would require chemo/radiation and run between $15K-20K. And the cure rate doesn't do better than amputation. We're opting for what is best to cure Beckon and get him back to his normal life as swiftly as possible.

Trini has already reached out to me with such comforting info and advice. I know I'll need her as we make this journey.
