Countdown......

Congrats Barb and I wish you well.

Got disappointing news yesterday that the current store manager won't stay on with me....she's going to transfer to another "corporate store". They pay benefits.

What does "paying benefits" refer to in Canada? I am just curious, because in the states in generally refers to vacation time, sick time, and health care. With health care being the most costly out of the others. I thought that in Canada health care was run by the government. Is that true, or how does that work?

Benefits refers to health (prescription drugs), dental, vision and sometimes life/disability insurance - for the most part. You pay incremental for that, though you can write it off on your taxes....but only if the expenditure exceeds a minimum amount. If you are on welfare, these benefits are paid.

The health care that the government provides, well, uum! I'm not entirely sure. I do know that that if I have a critical illness than I'll be covered....of course, I might have to go on a waiting list for treatment. I can pay for it by going elsewhere if I don't want to wait, and I may or may not be reimbursed. The only time I was ever hospitalized was when I was giving birth. So the birth was paid for by the government, but the private room I was given was suipplied by my health insurance. Otherwise, I would have been in a ward.

Our health care system ain't perfect for sure. We lose doctors and nurses to the US all the time for higher paying jobs....and that increases our wait times.

Health and dental benefits are definitely good for retention, and uncommon in retail. Unfortunately, the franchise head office has guaranteed jobs for my current staff in other stores if they choose not to accept my offers. Corporate does offer benefits.

Other benefits: sick leave, vacation, etc. are regulated by law. These are not "benefits" per se.

Hope that clarifies some. Feel free to step in, Other Canadian Folk!

Sounds about right...

As far as paying for health care goes... We have our Provincial healthcare benefits (sometimes employer paid... sometimes shared 50/50 and sometimes paid 100% by the employee) It's mandatory for everyone and costs about $120 a month for a family of 4. If you're a "low income" family, it would be either a lower fee or even free.

Some employers provide additional healthcare benefits called "extended health"... this is what covers you for chiropractors, RMTs, private rooms, prescription meds, vision care, etc. My employer happens to cover this 100%, but many split the cost 50/50. If you did not have extended health through your employer and wished to pay for it on your own, it would be about $250/mo for a family of 4.

Not really off topic, because it is something you need to look at as an employer. One thing to keep in mind, that if you are offering employees benefits and they have pre-exisiting health conditions, these are not usually covered for prescription drugs.

Tomorrow is D-day.....!

Yes, I will officially be taking over the store tomorrow. I'm building the list and checking it twice (and thrice!).

I keep thinking there is more I'm supposed to do, but I'm so tired (post Xmas and pre-opening) that I just want to go to bed.......but I'm sure I've forgotten something.....

Oh, well, I'm sure it will all work out. But there are times when I have a moment and say to myself....what was I thinking????? :eek2:

I know I've been cagey about it on the forum (i.e. what pet store franchise) but I promise that once the deal is 100% finalized, I will share in the appropriate part of the forum.

Deep cleasing breath and going to early bed tonight! :wink2::smile2:

If you can remember everything the list was incomplete anyway. There is always something missing but that is no big deal. Perfection is not something we obtain :wink2:
