Don't forget Barb, the government helps out somewhat with wages too, if you are needing to hire.

Got disappointing news yesterday that the current store manager won't stay on with me....she's going to transfer to another "corporate store". They pay benefits.
Congrats Barb and I wish you well.
What does "paying benefits" refer to in Canada? I am just curious, because in the states in generally refers to vacation time, sick time, and health care. With health care being the most costly out of the others. I thought that in Canada health care was run by the government. Is that true, or how does that work?
Benefits refers to health (prescription drugs), dental, vision and sometimes life/disability insurance - for the most part. You pay incremental for that, though you can write it off on your taxes....but only if the expenditure exceeds a minimum amount. If you are on welfare, these benefits are paid.
The health care that the government provides, well, uum! I'm not entirely sure. I do know that that if I have a critical illness than I'll be covered....of course, I might have to go on a waiting list for treatment. I can pay for it by going elsewhere if I don't want to wait, and I may or may not be reimbursed. The only time I was ever hospitalized was when I was giving birth. So the birth was paid for by the government, but the private room I was given was suipplied by my health insurance. Otherwise, I would have been in a ward.
Our health care system ain't perfect for sure. We lose doctors and nurses to the US all the time for higher paying jobs....and that increases our wait times.
Health and dental benefits are definitely good for retention, and uncommon in retail. Unfortunately, the franchise head office has guaranteed jobs for my current staff in other stores if they choose not to accept my offers. Corporate does offer benefits.
Other benefits: sick leave, vacation, etc. are regulated by law. These are not "benefits" per se.
Hope that clarifies some. Feel free to step in, Other Canadian Folk!
