Couple Questions

Hi everyone :)

It's been awhile since I've been here :o but I have a couple questions after taking Madi to her 1 year check-up.

After scoring an A+ for her exam, the vet and I were talking about some things. I had asked about Madi's weight (which was 18 lbs) and she said she looked great and was the right height/weight and I asked if I was feeding her enough/too much. She asked what she was eating and I told her Wellness brand. She kinda looked at me and hemmed and hawed and I said, "What, not a good brand?" Knowing full well she was gonna tell me no and try to get me to put her on Purnia. And sure enough she did LOL She says, "Well, it's not that they are a bad brand, just that there isn't enough scientific research to back them up. Now Purina has been around for a long time and they have lots of research. I recommend Purnia O.N.E."

Ok, whatever, not gonna happen here LOL

So, after that I was kinda aggitated at her. And she asked about flea treatment. And I told her I had been using a natural type treatment that I found that has just oils like clove, cinnamon and peppermint. She says, "Oh no, that not good for her at all." I asked why and she hemmed and hawed again and said it's just not good for them.

So, is it bad for me to use the oils instead of buying the stuff from the vet? It worked (we've been having issues with a few fleas since my MIL's dog came to visit last summer :uhoh: ) and I didn't have to put any chemicals into her system.

Also, what do you suggest for heartworm medicine? They have a couple different brands and I'd like your opinion.

Obviously your vet is Brand paid.

You have yourself on the right tract and you did right by knowing your choice of food was right. As far as flea meds if the oils are working I see no harm. How do you use the oils as a spray or just a dad here and there?
Heartworm meds, I use Interceptor, there is also the topical Revolution which works for fleas, ticks, heartworms. But I use Interceptor for Kia. It's pretty bad when we have to make sure we are up to date with what is good and not good for our pets. Because some of the vets just are too old school, the pet is just that a pet, WRONG!!!:( They are our furkids whom we love and take care of to the best of our ability thus we want the best for them.:biggrin2:
Sorry I got carried away there hope all is well with Madi, and it's great to hear from you again.

Oooh, I want to hear more about the oil's you use for fleas! I hate the meds. I worry about it harming the animal or the kids!

Natural Tick Prevention: Help Needed

I'm also trying to avoid using Frontline. It just can't be good for my girls, and Annie acts ill after a dose. So I'm open to learn what others use. I live in Tic Haven -- I swear, my phone number should be 1-800-GOT-TICS! :rolleyes2:

I also use Interceptor for Spencer's heartworm preventative and I've been using K9 Advantix for fleas, ticks, etc. Both my Vet and I have copies of the list of drugs than can adversely affect a dog with the MDR1 mutation and Ivermectin is one of them. Although I did not have Spencer tested, to be safe we follow the recommendations on that list. If you don't already have this information, you can get it on busteralert.org.

Brie, more about the oils, Please !!

Could you please let us know how you use the oils and which ones work the best. Don't make me beg, Please !!

I've always used the topical Revolution. And I've never had fleas or ticks - ever! Even all 12 years with Timber!

Even last summer, bringing Bacca up to the cottage wilds was not an issue as I was worried it might be.

I'll be sticking with it.

YEs can you tell me what you use for natural oils as I dont use flea/tick treatments when I breed my girls...usually im lucky enough to breed them in the dead of winter so its not an issue, however last spring I bred my girl and with in 1 week of breeding her I was pulling off atleast 5 ticks a day...I was at my wits end by the time I figured out she didnt take that day I was rubbing flea/tick stuff on her!

The flea treatment I used on Madi was Sergeant's Nature's Guardian. Here are the ingredients:

Peppermint Oil 3.00%
Cinnamon Oil 4.50%
Lemon Grass Oil 4.50%
Clove Oil 5.00%
Thyme Oil 5.00%
Other ingredients are: Vanillin, Isopropyl Myristate 78.00%

It is a little squeeze pack that you run down the back like other flea treatments.

You have yourself on the right tract and you did right by knowing your choice of food was right. As far as flea meds if the oils are working I see no harm. How do you use the oils as a spray or just a dad here and there?

Interceptor is what they gave her. I had asked about the Revolution because I gave it my cats and I was told that for dogs you can't get the all-in-one deal with the heartworms cause it doesn't work the same. Don't know if that is true or not. They said it would work on a couple types of worms, but not heartworms.

And I don't think you got carried away. It's our babies we're talking about. I don't think it's possible to get carried away
