Thanks so much, Susan. This is interesting...I actually corresponded with this lady last year and she told me that she wasn't sure this powder worked for ticks, although she knew it did for fleas. Since our problem is mainly ticks, I didn't pursue it.

So far we're having great luck with using apple cider vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle. I spritz it on the dogs and so far, so good. We are coming into the worst of tick season here so I'm curious to see if it still works. Even the chemical repellents didn't work for them last year.

So...if I start this with my furkids (giving internally)..I should discontinue Heartguard Plus, but continue with Frontline Plus unless I choose to go a different route for flea and tick protection...right?

DE does not control Heartworms. You should still give your dog Heartguard to prevent heartworms. DE helps control parasites in the digestive track like roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms.

Sorry, forgot the "not" in my previous post. DE does not control heartworms.

A lot of heartworms pills also kill adult roundworms, whipworms, etc. I'm not too familiar with heartguard. My dog takes interceptor and I know it advertises that.

So, I would def keep your dog on a heartworm preventive pill.

At the risk of , well, 'doing it again', I have to confess that I am very skeptical the the sharp edges of diatomaceous earth granules could lacerate the skins of worms while not being irritating to the intestinal lining, particularly the microscopic villi that absorb food. These are far more delicate structures than, say a roundworm body. To think that feeding this could shred a population of worms enough to eliminate the problem without microscopically damaging the membranes strains credibility.
I'm no expert, and have seen no studies one way or the other... just sayin'.

I appreciate your expert opinion very much. I'm just in the "research" stage and haven't made any decisions...but I sure will think about what you said. Thanks! I'd love to go a more "natural" route, but there seems to be negatives to that as well. Lots of food for thought ;-)..
