Diatomaceous Earth For Fleas & Internal Parasites.

So far, I have had good results using it.

I give it to pregnant dogs for the duration of the pregnancy, then I mix it with the puppy gruel and later the real food. I don't use chemical wormers on the puppies until they are 8 weeks old, and by then it's just to have something to put on the paper. I've never had a puppy poop out a visible worm.

Could it be coincidence that the dogs fed DE have no worms? Sure. Correlation doesn't equal causation, right? But I haven't yet found the downside to using it.

Of course with that said, when I see adult worms in the adult dogs, and it occasionally happens, I worm them with real wormer. I just try to keep pregnant girls and babies as chemical free as I can.

These are far more delicate structures than, say a roundworm body. To think that feeding this could shred a population of worms enough to eliminate the problem without microscopically damaging the membranes strains credibility.
I'm no expert, and have seen no studies one way or the other... just sayin'.

Logically that makes a lot of sense. A critters exterior being tougher than the internals of another.

I have to admit that I have wondered about this as well. Does the DE work in a mechanical action on the exterior like it does on external pests, or do the worms have to ingest it resulting in internal damage and death? I'm not sure.
 
ClantyreSheltie, good for you. I am hard pressed to find any drawbacks from using DE.

I would imagine that the biggest losers are the corporations who manufacture their particular brand of poisons, peddling dangerous chemicals and using fear tactics to encourage their usage.

It is just my opinion.

Making the connection between DE and flea control was done by WolfCreekRanch website. As long as you put it into the yard you shouldn't have to rub it on the furkids, it can be drying. And also as the others have said, giving a teas. a day is just good sense.

I wouldn't go without it again.

so how much DE do you put in your yards?
am already seeing fleas this year when normally it hasn't been a problem in our area.......

I use DE in my yard also. I basically put a light covering over my entire yard. I put extra along the border of my fences with the neighbors pets are.

I lived in TX last summer and the DE alone didn't work, helped but not 100%. So I added in vinegar and neem oil and haven't had any issues yet and my neighbors are already dosing theirs due to fleas. Granted I live in a different state, but the weather is pretty much the same right now. I've read when it get's SUPER hot like last year, the fleas die off and that was true in my case.

Do anyone know if DE works on ticks?? I've picked THREE off myself and a puppy in the last day.

thanks- didn't have any trouble last year but signs are there this year so thought we'd give DE a shot:smile2:

It certainly can't hurt to try. It also gets rid of the spiders, and the ants, and sadly probably some good bugs but that's just how it goes, I suppose. Good luck! I hate those stupid fleas...If it rains, the DE will get washed away FYI. My exterminator told me it's great stuff in dry areas, but we have a 50lb bag, so I think we have enough for a lotttttttt of rain!
