I was curious as to how many of you cut your Sheltie's whiskers. The breeder I adopted my Sheltie from cut all their Sheltie's whiskers and as my Sheltie's grow out I need to decide if to keep them trimmed or let them grow...
 
I don't! There is enough other hair to brush and trim, I'm not going to worry about a few stray hairs.

Besides, I think it accentuate their expressions! Coincidentally, Bacca has hound ears; eyes that are soft and often a little sad; and his whiskers droop too! Everything about his face screams: "Love me! Poor little lost lamb, am I!!!":sadsmile:

Indy has prick ears, eyes that tilt up, and whiskers that point straight out! Even his tan eyebrows add to a devilish look to his face. Everything about his face screams: "I'm trouble!" :eek2:

But I do believe that show dogs are trimmed. I don't know if its a requirement, or simple esthetics.
 
I think that Show dogs get their whiskers trimmed, for show, like Barb said. Personally, both my husband and I think Buddy's little whiskers are adorable and wouldn't think of cutting them. Guess it just depends on what you like best!
 
I don't cut the girls because they are my pets. I think if I was showing I would cut them. My Grandma used to show her Golden Retriever and always trimmed them off. It does make the face look neater but in the end I think it is all a matter of personal preference.
 
This ia thew info my vet has given me regarding trimming whiskers in a dog.

The whiskers are highly sensitive touch organs for a dog. A dog's whiskers may sense the wind direction and so help the dog determine the direction from which an odour is coming. These whiskers occur in clusters and serve as sensory structures - anything brushing against these whiskers stimulates the dog to close his eyes, pull away, turn his head, paw his face, or shake his head. Some exhibitors trim the whiskers of their show dogs to give the dog's head and face a smooth look. More importantly, it gives the judge a nice smooth feel in the ring. But such trimming may limit the dog's response to his environment and detracts from the natural appearance of the pet.

I would never trim the whiskers and in Germany they have disqualified show dogs if their whiskers are trimmed
 
I do not trim Aztec's, and I would not - because he actually uses them more than you would ever think. If he is walking to close to a wall, or something else, and his whispers touch them he immediately moves his head out of the way. It is excellent for him in the dark - because he has rather poor eyesight (he is not going blind or anything, he just has below average eyesight for a dog)
 
I used to trim the whiskers on my shelties when I was in 4-H many years ago, but since my Angy is a pet I would never trim his adorable little "catfish whiskers" they are just too cute!
 
My Show girls get their whiskers trimmed...Its amazing how much of a difference it makes in their head...Just trimming them really cleans up the look. However with that said my pet dog his has long kitty whiskers...I only trim show dogs.
I also must say I noticed last weekend at on of my shows that the corgi people didnt trim their whiskers....they looked kinda silly with them I thought!
 
I, like several of the posters, trim the whiskers for show. I only do it for the actual show and between shows the are left alone. My pet sheltie has never had hers trimmed.
