Do you have experience with Thyroid meds ?

I had mentioned on another thread the other day Gypsy was starting her thyroid meds. after posting I decided to do some research first. I went to Central Illinois Sheltie Rescue site and read some great info there. My vet prescribed Thyrozine and CISR recommended Solozine for shelties. I also emailed them and they were kind enough to get back to me in a timely matter in answering some questions I had. Does anyone have any experience using either of these meds with their shelties ? I also don't want to offend my vet and make him feel I am questioning his choice of meds. we have a great relationship but I have read Solozine is the gold standard for treating Thyroid issues and being CISR has the expertise in shelties I want to go with their recommendation. Should I print CISR's info page for him to read so he can see why I prefer to use this med. I know in any situation it is my choice what to treat my dog with but like I said I don't want him to feel I don't trust him with Gypsy or Chandler's health because I do. What would you suggest?
 
BarbV's Bacca is on thyroid medicine. I can't remember which one, but hopefully she will chime in.

I'm 90% sure my maltese takes solozine. I'll have to double check when I get home. She's had no issues with it.
 
Indy has been on Solozine for about 5 years now, and has done well with this med. They just upped his dose in December. He was on one tablet a day for forever, now taking one in the morning and one at night.

Bacca has been on Thyroid meds for almost a year (???). It's called Thyro-Tab and the label says Levothyroxine Sodium 0.2 mg. He's due for his next blood work, but all I can say that his last two blood works showed significant improvement while on this med.

You would never know that Bacca has both liver and thyroid issues, since he's been on this and his hepto-support supplements.

btw - Bacca is only just over 2 years old and was very young to be diagnosed. Most dogs carry the disease for years without obvious symptoms until they start to age. Bacca demonstrated the symptoms very young. I think that's a blessing as we were able to catch it early and start treatment early.

The liver is still the biggest concern, right now. The hepto seems to have stablized him, but I anticipate the time when something more will be required.

Barb I tried searching through you threads on info about blood levels but I may have missed it. Also tried to PM you but your stored messages are up to your limit so I can't send it.
 
There is a fantastic doctor who does lots of work on thyroid, Dr. Jean Dodds. Google her, and she has a website with a lot of information. I do believe that you can also call and/or e-mail them with questions. I used to have my vet pull my setters blood and send it to her for analysis and treatment plans, as I found her to be very researched in regards to thyroid issues and autoimmune diseases.

Thanks, I came across some info last night and have to go back and research it more. I'm going to print it and take it to my vet also. Was your setter on thyroid meds and do you remember which one it was? I'm glad you posted because sometimes on the internet you really don't who these people really are so it's nice to know Dr.Dodds is legitimate.

Sorry, I've cleaned up my emails now. I'll try searching the forum. I can't find all my paperwork (I moved a few months ago, and everything is still in dissarray). If I find it, I'll post the threads a little later.
