Do you have experience with Thyroid meds ?

Thyriod Meds

I don't have any experience with a Sheltie with a Thyriod condition but I did have a cat who had that condition for 9 years. I also had a cat with a heart condition that took the very expensive Cardizem. Because they were long term maintenance drugs and the same as the medications for the same human conditions, I had the Vet write me a prescription which I had filled at a local Pharmacy. There is a significant price difference - separate from the price difference between the ethical and the generic versions. I do get antibiotics or drops and such directly from the vet but for long terms stuff, I had to consider annual costs. I was very diligent on going in every 6 months to get the blood work to ensure that the dosage was properly regulated and there certainly were a lot of changes over the years so that is really important. Once the dosage is properly regulated, this condition is really not difficult to deal with for either you or your pet. Good luck.

I had mentioned on another thread the other day Gypsy was starting her thyroid meds. after posting I decided to do some research first. I went to Central Illinois Sheltie Rescue site and read some great info there. My vet prescribed Thyrozine and CISR recommended Solozine for shelties. I also emailed them and they were kind enough to get back to me in a timely matter in answering some questions I had. Does anyone have any experience using either of these meds with their shelties ? I also don't want to offend my vet and make him feel I am questioning his choice of meds. we have a great relationship but I have read Solozine is the gold standard for treating Thyroid issues and being CISR has the expertise in shelties I want to go with their recommendation. Should I print CISR's info page for him to read so he can see why I prefer to use this med. I know in any situation it is my choice what to treat my dog with but like I said I don't want him to feel I don't trust him with Gypsy or Chandler's health because I do. What would you suggest?

Hi, I am kind of late for this thread, but I still decided to respond. Here is Cassie's story.
Her Dr. has drawn blood for something else and discovered that Cassie had an underactive thyroid. That explained her weight gain, and relative inactivity (for her young age). Medicine is called Thyro-Tabs. First couple of months Cassie took 1 whole pill .3 mg. 2 times a day. Then a Dr. checked her blood again and said it was too high and reduced a dose to .5 pill . We suspected that too high dose caused Cassie's urinating too often. We even thought it was UTI, but the Dr. said No.There were symptoms like UTI though.
So since September Cassie has been taking .5 pill also 2 times a day (1 pill total). She gained 1 pound, but she feels well in general, and quite active.
