Dog Advertising!

I think it's because of the 'Lassie look' - the vast majority of dog owners can identify with Lassie, whereas you pick a breed, say BC, and you're only appealing to BC owners and lovers. Most people I meet don't even know what breed Lassie was, they just say Lassie dog. So whether it's a Collie or Sheltie I don't think the average person would care about the difference, it's just Lassie.

Then I think a Sheltie is used rather than a Collie because, let's be frank, in the face a Sheltie is more attractive than a Collie. A Sheltie face is more defined (esp the muzzle) and would photograph better.

So that's my theory.

My Prima Donna, Piper, just won a photo contest held for team members by my employer. There were 258 entries, and she tied for 2nd place... and I am not a professional photographer, so it was all her:wink2:
They plan on using her picture on the Facebook page and packages of treats!
Oh, first place went to a Silky Terrier and Piper tied with a French Bulldog for 2nd.

I believe Dr. Shelli (Justicemom) posted awhile back that sometimes she recognized some of the shelties on dog food products. How cool is that!

A few years back Justices Grandpa Wysk was in the Iams Senior bag. Grizz has done some photo shoots but so far has not been on a product that we know of.

I have a friend who works for ad photographers and what they look for is a trained cute dog that can do what they need whether it is sit cute, jump run etc. We all know shelties can take direction well.:smile2:

Well, Shelties are beautiful, gentle, have wonderfully expressive faces, and remind people of Lassie. I can't take Dickens walking without hearing "Lassie" from people of all sorts, while they remark what a beautiful "Collie" "she" is. Who couldn't love a Sheltie?!

total hams

My previous shelties could HAM it up for the camera...all I had to do was say "look cute" and they would strike a pose. Kaleigh and Savannah lack this gene, or at least at this stage in their lives. We on here KNOW they are superior, we KNOW they are fantastic at being adorable-especially if there is any hint of getting a treat involved. So kinda a no brainer that they get picked as photogenic representation in ads... A testimony to their adorability is all the beautiful lads and lasses pictured here!!!!!!!!!!

I have a couple of threads on here somewhere with my Dandie.

She did a Clarks shoes advertisement and she was in a Febreze commercial for a long time.

I have a couple of threads on here somewhere with my Dandie.

She did a Clarks shoes advertisement and she was in a Febreze commercial for a long time.

I was able to search and find them:

They are threads listed:

New Fiat Commercial
Dandies Febreze Commercial
Dandie in Clarks Shoe Commercial
Vinca is on Pet Prints 2013 Shetland Sheepdog Calendar

Note: How proud you must be. I remember seeing Dandie on the Febreze commercial and I was proud of her and she's not even my dog! I told a lot of my friends to watch for that commercial. Will she be on anymore commercials coming up?

Casey is our prettiest sheltie. But he ALWAYS, ALWAYS pulls his ears back for a picture. So, he looks like a cute face with no ears. :gaah

It seems for a while, there were a lot of border collies in commercials and other ads. I honestly haven't seen a ton of Shelties in commercials or print ads. Maybe one here or there.

I think I know why. I was contacted for a photo shoot for my Bobby to appear in a print ad for a dog bed that was printed in this store's weekly flyer.

They thought of me, not because of my beautiful Bobby - but because of his training, he could handle the studio lights, the "flash-back" of the lighting against giant umbrella things and not be upset or nervous. He was extremely posable and of course, he had a great expression anyway...

So maybe it is the fabulous trainability ~ bidability that makes the sheltie a popular choice for those that made the advertistment pictures.

By the way, he got $50 for about 20 minutes of work. :D
