Shaun it is hysterical to watch Telly charging through the doggy door regardless. It's like he has no clue he can walk out the door and not the doggy door. It's a game here and I get a great laugh watching him. He gets so confused if I put the little locking door up on the door. He has no clue how to get outside or back in

Yes we have a doggy door in our back door. We used pieces of chicken to coax them out or in. We tape up the magnetic flap until they get it down just pushing the center flap. Though the extra resistance of the magnets can be a bit of a hang up when they are used to the free moving center flap only.

The good thing about a dog door is that if you have one that already knows it a new addition will learn quite quickly. Panda got it the first day with Bailey being the lead. It is funny seeing her push her way and kind of fall out the other side but she is doing very well with it now after one week and she is just a little over 8 weeks old.

I'm getting new patio doors, and thought about the doggy door. I think shelties learn fast. I didn't get the doggy door, having thoughts the ferral cats that run around here would follow my shelties in the house. My friend next door traps them and takes them to the SPCA.

Its really horrible when they go to the neighbor's house, where she has her cats who sit in the window, and these cats rip up her screens to get in. Otherwise my two would love a door.

I'm going to put one in the door between my kitchen and the veranda, which will eventually be turned into a partial sunroom. This way, they can go in and out without me having the door open. If I want them to go outside, I will have to open the veranda door, but that's OK. I'm in the middle of moving, but so far, they love to hang out in the veranda - I think because it is cool in there?! so I figure a doggy door to it will be a great idea.

Our Telly will only go outside through the doggy door even if you open the door. Out through the doggy door with the door open, and back in through it. He is a little clueless

I got a removable door to use when staying with family and was not happy with it. Had to get a large size because the medium was too narrow for an oversize sheltie. Then my brother showed me how easy it was for someone to climb through the door - and he has a middle age spread so a younger or smaller male thief would have no problems. Plus the kids could also climb through it. Now no-one will let me use the door at their place and I wasted $400.

Our in-laws have a doggie door for their dog which Sadie was completely spooked by. She acted like the doggie door was sucking Jazz into some sort of black hole! :lol:

Sadie isn't around it enough to get comfortable with using it but with lots of coaxing and praise she's much less hesitant to approach it and seems to have realized that Jazz isn't going to be killed by it. I think if she were around it more often she'd be running in and out of it too.

Just use praise and some high value treats to coax her through (maybe you stand on one side and pup on the other). It shouldn't take your bunch too long to get used to it :smile2:

I'm not worried about someone coming into my house. If they make it through the Sheltie size dog door they will have to deal with my Great Pyr Mylo! :eek2:

When I was training my late sheltie Ellie to use the doggie dog, she would only go out though it. It took another month before she would come in through it. One thing is guaranteed, if you are out and its raining, you will come home to a wet sheltie sleeping on the couch. Or was that just me?
