Ear Gluing!

Walmart doesn't always carry it. I looked repeatedly for it at several Walmart locations and could find it. It wasn't until about a month ago that I came across it.

btw, I think I ws the one who recommended Tear Mender, I've not heard of anyone else on the forum using it but me. I found it on a Canadian breeders web site somewhere after phoning around and not being able to find Speed Sew anywhere.

I didn't use Narmowen's moleskin method though, just the tear mender to tip the ears forward. I didn't become familiar with the moleskin method until I discovered this site after I'd finished ear gluing Sadie :smile2:
 
How long?

How long should we glue our puppy's ears before we give up on tipping them? He is currently almost seven months old and has been having his ears glued since about 8 or 9 weeks. I know that some dogs take longer than others, but how do we decide that it just isn't going to happen?

Until he's done teething!

I don't always use moleskin. I only use it when the ear is floppy (hound ears or just breaking too low). When it's a prick ear, I just glue the tip down to the fur in front of the ear, and that seems to do the trick. (The long fur, not the fur on his forhead!)

Detachol also removes pine sap wonderfully! :D
 
As Narmowen said, you can keep gluing them until he's completely done with teething. If they're still standing up after that then they'll just have to stay that way.

I think I glued Sadie's ears till she was around 5-6 months old, but it differs depending on the pup. Here is the album I made of Sadie growing up, as you'll see I started gluing when she was 13 weeks old and stopped at about 6-7 months old.

It might be timing....I was at my Walmart yesterday in the sewing section looking for something else and noticed that they were all out, though they carried it before.

I'm not really an expert on ear positioning but his ears do seem a bit floppy and they should tip forward, not side ways. I'd talk to my breeder about it or someone who knows about such things. I think it looks as if his ears do need to be glued and braced though, but you should probably ask someone with more experience.

Actually, it helps alot! You confirmed what I thought myself.

I'm just not sure if i'm up to the gluing again, or whether or not to just let it go. I'm very torn. I love the proper tipped ears, but he's not a show dog, so why should I care?

I think it was you who suggested it!! But, my friend who is a dog trainer actually showed me how to tip with moleskin. At first we did it with just Jiffy Sew, but after they came unglued, the tips started to tip backwards, so we thought that if we used a stiffer material it would prevent them from tipping back anymore. So far so Good!! But this glue seems to be doing a better job for Caliber. At least this way if I need to clean the glue out it doesn't need to be pulled out, and I don't need to order online for adhesive remover. I hate shopping online...:lol:
