Ear Tipping

So I know that there are a lot of people out there that want their Sheltie ears to tip and some that could care less because either way they are so adorable : ) While I know there are the typical ways of gluing, bracing and all of that messy stuff. There are some that feel this is cruel to do and some that don't mind but for me, I discovered an easy painless clean way to do little Shelbie's and she seemed to love the attention :biggrin2: What I did was massaged the ears where I wanted them to fold for about five minutes here and there throughout the day. For a while her ears started to fly and go every which way but eventually they went back into the tipped position and whenever I noticed them to start pricking again I would massage them and so far so good, they are still tipped and Shelbie is still smiling :biggrin2:

Be glad you didn't have to do it with your sheltie Treader! :winkgrin:

Its not fun! I'm not sure it was worth all the trouble, I really felt like I was just needlessly torchuring her! I'd just about given up when I found a really good glue that made them stay in place for more than a few days!
 
I use Speed Sew!

My breeder glued Bacca's ears the day I picked him up at 8 weeks.

So far, I've only had to touch it up once, and he is now almost 16 weeks.

My breeder says to stick it through till he's done teething, because apparently that age does wonky things with ears. So it looks like I've got a few more months of gluing to go.

The tips are glued down and also the hair between the ears is glued together to keep the ears upright. Doesn't bother my pup in the least, even though he looks pretty silly at the moment.

He's going through that gawky puppy phase...all legs and with his ears glued down, he looks totally out of proportion. But people stop me on the street to say how cute he his. So I guess he doesn't look that bad!
 
Update....

Well the glue finally worked itself out. I tried to reglue and made a royal mess of it and ended up having to cut alot of hair around the ears to remove the glue mess that I made.

And now there's not enough hair to glue so I'm just gonna have to leave it for now.

And so what, I guess...he's not a show dog, so if he ends up with wonky ears, I suppose that only adds to his charm!

I guess I'll let the hair grow a little and watch what his ears do. Right now, tipping does not seem to be the issue....its more that his ears lie flat on his his head....ok maybe just a little glue to bring his ears back together again....:smile2:
 
Ear gluing definitely takes practice, which is hard to get unless you're a breader!

I had a lot of trouble finding a good glue, I was determined that I was going to find one locally so that I wouldn't have to pay shipping. I made so many messes with the glues that didn't work well. Poor Sadie, she was very patient, I was just about to give up when I found one that was great.

I was told that giving a rest from gluing for a few days is ok but that as soon as the ear(s) start poping up that you need to glue again. I'd say that you're safe as long as the ear(s) don't start poping, as soon as they do you should try gluing again or you may end up with pricked ear(s)
 
last ditch effort...

I've tried it all over the years. With our newest addition, Tyler, it has been particularly challenging. His ears are as willful as he is. :lol:

What seems to be working for him are band-aids. Yep, large, folded over band-aids.

I peel back 1/2 of the backing & fold it over, sticking it to itself. I then remove the other 1/2 backing & stick that to the inside tip of his ears. The fabric section of the folded over bandaid now extends beyond the tip of the ear.

It adds enough weight that it pulls the tips over. It looks silly, but 2 large band-aids are enough on each ear to pull Tyler's over. They fall off after a 4-5 days & I just replace them. His ears are in perfect position while they are on.

Your mileage might vary & size/number of band-aids will need to be adjusted for individual dogs, but it's easy, quick & not messy. Tyler doesn't even notice them now.

My husband tells me just to give up...(Tyler is now 8 months old) but I wont admit defeat yet! :rolleyes2:

Ok and just a couple of days later, his ears have gone totally wonky. One ear totally flying up all the time and one ear lying flat.

I tried to reglue his ears last night but that was a disaster. I'd been so good at trimming his ears that I had no hair to glue too.

I'm interested in the band-aid approach but I'm not visualizing how it works. Can you walk through the step by step or point me to a website
