Ear Tipping

I will say that bracing or gluing your sheltie's ears takes work! I initially hesitated to buy speed sew and zo-eze (recommended glue and remover) and used something at Wal-Mart. The glue did not work. I ordered Speed Sew online and his ears stayed put for over a week, but the process of gluing and removing the glue was hard for me for two reasons: you have to make sure to glue JUST HAIR and no ear (very hard), and much of the hair breaks off when removing it.

MY RECOMMENDATION:
Contact your breeder or a Sheltie breeder near you and ask if they can provide the ear bracing service for you. A local breeder does Wyatt's because the breeder I bought him from lives 5 hours away. She braces them about once a week (should stay in longer, but he knows just how to get them undone) for $10. This method is preferable because the process involves gluing fabric to fabric (adhesive piece placed inside the ear) and not the actual hair or ear itself.

You always want to aim for hair to hair. You roll the glue between your fingers, twining with the hair.

There are lots of posts already on various techniques. And I'm too tired tonight to find them all, honestly.

But if you can't find them, let me know, and I'll help point you and to other websites on ear gluing.
 
The way our puppies are done, there is a layer of tape that is stuck right against the ear leather. However, the top layer of tape, which is stuck on tape-to-tape, is the one that bears the "load" of the opposite ear (via a piece of yarn), and it's almost always this tape-to-tape piece that gets pulled off by the puppies.

The tape used is a very specific type that is imported from Japan; it generally sticks until oil/dirt/other puppies intervene, at which point it will pull off on its own. We've tried a number of medical-type tapes, but this Japanese brand really is the best, in terms of both comfort and durability. Yes, puppies can pull their tapes off, but I've never seen them actually "rip" off of the skin such as would cause them harm.

We use an adhesive remover to de-glue the tapes when we need to - we certainly don't rip the tapes off, band-aid style! I can't speak for everyone, but our puppies don't seem to mind the tapes, and missjenneygirl likes to keep the ears braced well into a young dog's second year.
 
Huge fan of the Japanese tape!! Its soo easy to work with to both put on and take off the ears. And yes like tofu pup said most times it work its way off by itself so its easy to remove. And no fur is ripped out like the glue method. I find the tape method soo much less tramatic for both the dogs and me!:wink2:
 
We gave McKinley a bath just an hour ago, and removed the Japanese tape with baby oil. It is a bit sticky right at the moment, but it is not raw.

His little ears are really oily naturally and this tape still remained in place for the most part for 3 weeks now.

Now they need to be reset!! He has rather long kind of jack rabbit ears and if they don't flip/tip over they are going to look like satelites.:no:
 
yea I ordered the japanese tape that my breeder recommended.

I rolled it to make it double sided, put it on her ear and tipped it. One already fell out...but the other has been in for almost two weeks.

I just got nervous when someone mentioned that the glue is supposed to be fur to fur. I thought maybe that was the same for the tape. That's why I asked.

My 5 months old Sheltie has glued ears - so far so good - i´ve just read the post of Shetland Sheepmonster mentioning the foot cream by the brand Neutrogena. Has anyone else tried it so far? I´ve already bought it, so I hope it helps!
