Ear Tipping

I came up with that method on my own after getting frustrated with the glue & moleskin. There is no website to show pictures. I guess if I think of it I could take some photos.

Take a band-aid out of the wrapper.

There should be two pull tabs - one for each sticky side. Remove one tab.

Take the exposed sticky side & fold it over on itself - sticking it to the pad (the side of band-aid that would normally contact skin).

The band-aid is now about 1/2 as long & the second tab has yet to be removed.

Remove the second tab. You now have 1/2 a band-aid with adhesive, the other half isn't.

Adhear that sticky side to the inside of your dogs ear with the pad/non-stick portion extending beyond the tip of the ear. (Check my profile for a picture of Tyler sporting his band-aids.)

Tip the ear forward.

It may take a day or two for a stiff ear to fold under the weight, but they eventually give in to gravity.

You may need to add another one to increase the weight. (Tyler uses 2 for each ear.)

after trying the glue without success, I'm trying your bandaid method. After a few times of Indy shaking them off, I think we have a set that will stay for a few days! He looks absolutely ridiculous but , hey...we'll see how it goes! Thanks for the "tip"! :smile2:
 
Ears

Well having tried most of these and just getting frustrated. I've decided to just let it be. Both her ears stand tall, not a single fold in them. Since she is not a show dog just my baby, I will just let them go where- ever they please.:biggrin2:Enough of that stuff.:lol:
 
Over here the most common method is using Kaolin Poultice. I was worried it was going to be a little messy though so Ive gone for the glueing.

First week I did it wrong, to set them I pressed into his fur to his head and when they came loose I was left with a matt which I had to trim out.

You guys recommended me the Adhesive remover which helps, but I also held the hair between my fingers and that was less messy and I usually have to re-do after about 10 days - saying that his right one is unstuck now but its stayed tipped so Ill leave that until it either starts pricking or the other one comes unstuck :lol: I wish they would change the breed standard it would make everybodies lives much easier who wanted to show :yes:
 
Boy I came on here just to look for this ear glueing advise.

My breader sent us home with our puppy with his ears glued, some No Sew and adhisive remover. His ears stayed glued for about 4 weeks I reglued them and tried the remover to get the glob before redoing them.

That remover smelled aweful and Pascal really hated the smell most of all he even acted like it hurt him, maybe burned his skin? Anyway I gave up and he has the most hidious looking mouse ears!

I love the bandaid idea and will give that a go tomorrow morning it sounds way more doable although I bet Pascal will have them off in minutes.

I time him and let you know how long they lasted, he,hee.
 
You may need to try a few times with the bandaids. It took me a few tries before I got them to stay on. Indy had a vet appt on Monday and the vet glued his ears for me, so I've abandoned the bandaids for now. Even the vets gluing didn't hold well so I got some hair extension glue to reinforce the vets work. the hair glue seems to work well and it comes in colors! My Indy's ears are black, and I was able to get black glue! At least when I smear it all over you can't see it! :rolleyes2:
 
Ears

Hi everyone! Ripley had hound ears as a pup so I had to keep them glued for a pretty long time and had to work on them pretty hard to get them to look right. It takes precision, but it definitely works. Here are some non-traditional approaches:

For low ears: I fixed Ripley low ears (they were lying flat against his head almost) by using breathe-right strips. You cut a breathe-right strip in half, put a piece of tape on the inside back of the ear (the lower half) stick the half a breathe-right strip on it, and put another flat piece of tape over it. Then you roll up a smaller piece of tape and use that to stick the top half of the ear down against the inside. This allows the cartilage to build strength by using the brace. Its important not to leave them braced with breathe-rights for too many weeks or the ears can end up pricking (just take them down every 2 weeks or so and see how they're doing). You can also supplement with vitamin C, which helps strengthen the cartilage. Also, I wouldn't give the vitamin C for more than 2 weeks or so, keep an eye on the ears.

For ears that stick up: For ears that are sticking up too much, I started using Neutrogena Norwegian formula Foot Cream. Its design to soften calluses significantly, so if you rub it on the crease (or where you want the ear to crease) and over the top half you can increase your chances of getting a better looking ear. You can find this stuff at CVS in the lotion section.

Hope this helps anyone who thinks they've tried just about everything!

Bacca's ears are starting to tip a little low and starting to swivel outwards, so I emailed my breeder and she advised the following:

Instead of folding the ear at the notch in the inside ear, fold the tip 1/2 up from the notch. Then, take a little hair on each inside ear, twist together and glue. This braces the ears together to keep them from flopping to the side.

These two techniques together should keep a nice 1/4 tip but still an upright perky, ear.

I'm doing this on the weekend. Crossing my fingers! Sure hope I get it right this time. The last time I did it, I made such a mess that I had to clip all the glue (and hair) out and wait for some hair to grow back!
 
Yep....glued his ears this weekend. One ear looks fine, the other looks totally wonky.

I'll have to go to the store and get some adhesive remover and start again. :o

I think I'll give it one more try and then live with whatever he has. It's just that he has sorta hound dog ears that flop too much and swivel out. I'd rather full pricked ears!
 
Not having much luck either with Indy. The taping the vet did was rubbing between his ears causing a bald spot. I tried to remove the whole thing but now he is all matted and I can't tell where his ear is to snip the hair that is matted off! He's had enough of me messing with his ears, so he is less than cooperative now, to say the least. Once I get this mess cleared up I think I'm done. Maybe I'll go back to the bandaids since they were easy and didn't seem to bother him.
