Ears question

Not sure this belongs in the grooming topic but here goes anyway. My little guy is 12 weeks old and has one ear that flops a lot sometimes and just a little other times. His other ear only flops when he first wakes up from a nap or a night's sleep. The rest of the time it's straight up. When I first got him I told the breeder I didn't care if his ears were perfect for the breed. If they tipped, they tipped if they ended up pricked, they ended up pricked. He had his ears glued in the center of his head when we picked him up and she clipped the glue out for me. My last sheltie had pricked ears. I'm not showing him so it really doesn't matter to me. HOWEVER, I'd like to have both ears the same. One prick ear and one tipped ear might look kinda goofy. So, what I would like to know is, at what age do we know what they are going to do? Will the other one stand up? Or will the other one tip? When I got him at 9.5 weeks, they were both standing up. When the one tipped, I assumed the other would tip shortly after. Now I'm not sure what to do.

I think they're both going to stand up

Ok, here is what he looked like maybe 2 weeks ago. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n252/Hwboutthat1/Canon014.jpg?t=1209656579

And about the time I posted the question about the ears a few days ago. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n252/Hwboutthat1/sic-proj2060.jpg?t=1209657086

And here he is today. http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n252/Hwboutthat1/sic-proj2062.jpg?t=1209657120

I'm guessing at this point, his ears are probably going to stay standing straight up, which is perfectly fine with me!

Thanks for your reply, your little Treader is very cute!

Welcome Uh Oh Oreo

What an appropriate name for your little pup. it's pretty hard to tell how his ears will be, My Little Kiara, Has one bent one day two bent the next. Then both straight the next. So I think as they progress in age than they will develop better.

Shelbie's ears did this too for about 3 or 4 weeks. They just started going every which way! We thought she had a dead ear at one point because it flopped and the other was pricked. We just kept rubbing them where we wanted them to crease and they eventually calmed down. Now her ears are tipped :biggrin2: I think that they just go through a stage where their ears sort of freak out for a bit during teething.

If you're just worried about the tips, just glue the tips to the hair right infront of the ear (those long wispies) with a fabric glue. If you want them closer together, create a hair bridge by taking hair from the outside corner of the ear (along the same edge where it's tipped), from each ear, and gluing that together. You don't have to pull them as close as that link does. I pull mine just to where I want them on their head-no closer, because the ears will fold. The ears are pretty much hard by the time their 6 months old (or when they stop teething.)

Better link (and basically what I do:) http://www.echowyn.com/Ears.html

I use fabric glue to do them.

A better link on how to tip them (and it uses the type of glue I do): http://home.netcom.com/~sheltie1/id7.html

So 6 months is too late to try and tip the ears?

I was hoping Madi's were gonna tip, for a while it looked as though they were and we would crease them and fold them. But in the last couple months they've decided to stand straight up!

I guess it doesn't matter to much if they tip, I just think they are so cute that way and it really gives them the sheltie look :)

I was told that if they're not tipping by the age of 6 months then they're not going to.

I'm no expert though, maybe someone else says differently.

I started gluing Sadie's ears when she was 3 1/2 months old, as soon as her ears started standing up.
