Smoke uses his paw to tip his food bowl over, then eats the kibble off of the floor. Its very entertaining to watch
Sounds like Smoke doesn't want to put his face in his dish! I'm sure that is very funny to see!

Sadie did that as a small puppy, she was simply too busy to stop and eat, she'd try and take some food with her.

My Sawyer (now passed) did this all his life. He would go grab a mouthful, trot from the kitchen to the living room (or where ever we were), drop the food on the floor and eat it delicately one by one. Then he'd go get more and repeat the process until he was done eating. I think he just wanted to be where we were. Of course, he only did this with his dry dog food so I didn't care. If he got wet food he gobbled it up right out of the bowl. He didn't get wet food very often so it was his special treat.
He also never ate until he was sure that we were done eating for a while. I think he didn't want to fill up on dog food if there was a chance someone would drop something from the table.
Oreo, on the other hand, also tips his food dish over with his foot. I don't mind that so much, but I'm not happy when he does it with his water.

Our sheltie Cosmo, now at Rainbow Bridge, used to take her food out of the bowl all of the time. While we were at the kitchen table eating, she would carry mouthfuls of food and drop them on the bottom stair in the kitchen. She would then use the stair as her dinner table. It was so funny to watch her join us for dinner.

CeCe has done this since day one too. At first I thought it was because she was used to carrying the food away from her littermates, but now I'm wondering if it's not instinctual?

All my dogs have done this.
They all have taken there food by the mouthful and occasionally just morsel and eaten it elseware. don't know why but each one has and My parents dog did as well.

Picnicking
I'm glad other people's Shelties do it too. My little girl has always done this since we got her. No matter where we are, whomever house we are visiting, camping, whatever, she does it everytime she eats. Especially since she usually will wait to eat until I am done, so then she has to bring her food into the living room to join me. Her little "picnicking" is so hilarious to people who don't come over often for dinner.
