Fish Oil Supplement

Lily is on both phenobarbital and potassium bromide for cluster seizures. One of the side effects of her drug protocol seems to be dry skin and fur. Her regular vet recommended that I consider giving her a fish oil supplement.

Could anyone recommend a safe brand?

I use Welactin made by Nutramax...derived from cold water fish...omega-3 supplement.

How is Lily doing on her seizure meds? I was just thinking about her the other day and hoping she was doing OK since you hadn't posted an update in a while.
Really hope the meds are helping her!!

Thanks for asking about Lily.

We've had our ups and downs.

Lily's neurologist added potassium bromide in late summer. At first, it seemed like it was making a difference. We went 36 days between seizures, and there were several times when she had a single seizure rather than two.

Unfortunately, that didn't last. She's back to 24 or so days between seizures. In fact, the last clusters were just 19 days apart. I'm hoping the fact that she had her distemper and kennel cough booster played into the shorter span.

We're taking Lily back up to her neurologist at the end of the month. She'll have another liver bile test at that time.

I'm really hoping that the doctor will consider changing the potassium bromide. She's gained 4 pounds since she began taking it despite being on weight-maintenance dog food. She's always thirsty and drank almost a gallon of water one day. (I know that sounds terrible. It's one of the reasons we're taking her back to her neurologist).

On the other hand, she's still a happy and fun-loving dog. I am getting better at administering her cluster drugs, so that helps. I just wish the doctor would find something that will give Lily more time or limit the seizures to one each episode.

I do appreciate your asking after Lily.

I am really sorry that Lily's cluster seizures are not being better controlled by the meds. Cluster seizures are hard...we had a sable boy, Yoda, with cluster seizures and it was heartbreaking to see. Thankfully, although they cause confusion, seizures don't seem to cause any actual pain for the little dog experiencing them. Lily sounds like a sweetheart and she is lucky to have a Mom who is doing everything possible to help her. Sending you and Lily many hugs. :hugs

Gah. Why are you vaccinating a seizure dog? The less you put into her the better she will be. Her body doesn't need to be having an immune response on top of the seizures.

My former landlord has a seizure poodle that she has managed to get to seriously low doses of the bromide through regular acupuncture. Her goal is to get her completely off the bromide. It made her appear and act stoned.

Distemper is prevalent in my part of the country, and Lily could die from it just as easily as from a grand mal seizure. I weighed the consequences of vaccinations and consulted both Lily's vet and neurologist who assured me that giving the boosters was safe.

Bromide increases Lily's appetite and thirst.
