Food Recommendation?

We fed Nutro Naturals or Nutro Ultra to our dogs for many years, and only started looking to change when a supply problem developed for our area...its a little hard to stay on a food when the shelf at the store is empty all the time!

I say what ever works for you keep doing it. as the adage goes If it aint broken....
I feed mine (who pic is in the upper left corner) Eukanuba..People scream its garbage...ect...well its working for him. My other older dogs eat grain free, its lower protein and fat.

I know that but you cut out the key words to my statement

Some dogs cannot handle a food with no grain in it no matter how low the protein is. That's not a reflection on the quality of the food, just the individual dog.

I wish I could feed him a variety of TOTW or Blue Wilderness or some other grain free food but his system can't handle it. He even gets diarrhea and vomiting if he eats too much boiled chicken or beef.

Again, that is not a reflection on the quality of grain free foods. It is simply a statement to be cautious because some dog's systems cannot handle a food without the grain.

I am sorry. I by no means meant to upset you. I was just stating that there is a variety of TOTW that has lower protein. I was not aware of this when I first starting checking out dog foods, and was happy to find a grain free variety that WAS lower in protein than the other grain free foods. Most of the other grain free foods run with protein contents in the 30-40 percent range.

Grain free also does not mean that there are no carbohydrate sources. It just means that the carbohydrate sources are not grains....they are potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc.

Excellent question but I think this post would best be placed in a different thread. You'll probably get way more responses and without accidentally high jacking someone else's thread.

Wasn't trying to hijack a thread. The subject had already kind of been brought up. People on here get just plain out rude about the wildest stuff. :rolleyes2:

Nutro Natural Choice is a great brand. Its made in Goulburn NSW so its a good local choice and is made from human grade meat. My dogs love it, would you believe their favourite is the tinned lite - must be the chunks of carrot.

In the mornings in winter mine get a 1/4 cup of kibble. I have had them on Eagle Pack but supply of EP is erratic in Australia so I wont be replacing it, they also get the occassional Advance Dental (giant breed because Deska doesnt chew). We win a lot of Nutro at Flyball comps so once FB season starts mine will be back on Nutro for breakfast and we will probably stick with it..

I think one of the best products we have here is Dr Bruce's Vets All Natural (VAN) complete mix. VAN is fantastic stuff, you soak it overnight and mix it in with meat (raw or cooked). Mine get a lot of roo. I know a lot of people who use it with dogs with allergies and sensitive stomachs. Here is their website http://www.vetsallnatural.com.au/ and its available at petbarn and alot of pet supply shops. Mine stopped eating horse feed and wildlife poo (except for roo - bit of a delicacy) since being on VAN so they must really want that natural taste in their diets.

And yep, our quarantine laws are really strict so it deters lots of companies bringing in food and supplements. Which amazes me that good quality stuff (like vibrant Pet) doesnt come in but we manage to get awful treats from China that have caused dog illnesses.

I wasn't being rude and it was meant with the utmost respect for both you and the person who started the thread and I don't really appreciate the accusation or the attitude.

What you said IS a great question and I thought that you'd get much better responses if you created your own thread, so that its easier for others to see. I was actually looking forward to you starting your own thread, I thought it would be a really interesting read with all our experts on the forum. It seemed to me that you'd probably get a great debate going that would provide other forum members with valuable information that they could find much easier.

And the fact remains, that if this debate begins here, you will be taking away from the question that this new forum member is asking. As YOU pointed out, your question is COMPLETELY off topic here.

I'm getting the feeling its REALLY hot over that side of the world and you are all missing out on your daily walks and getting all tetchy. Honestly you are worse than your housebound pups in winter:razz:.

Not feeling touchy myself and the weather here has cooled down some. Just sort of shocked by the response I got. I didn't think I said anything that could be taken as bad. :confused2:

No no, not you, I just meant generally. There have been a lot more posts lately, I figured everyone must be indoors because of the heat. Unlike me - I'm indoors because its cold.

You are right its a good question but needs its own thread if we want to take it further. We dont want to overwhelm Emma with info.

I get overwhelmed easily  Hehe. Food and kennel club registries are the most baffling.

I shall have a look at that site, Caro, thanks. I've never seen it around here before- and I know we don't have it at work- but there would probably be some pet shop, somewhere, that would stock it if I wanted to give it a try.
