I taught Ember to jump up into my arms by sitting down on the edge of a chair , patting my legs and telling her Hup. Then when she was jumping in my lap I would stand up slightly with my legs bent and just catch her. Repeat steps by inching up until you are standing.
However, Ember no longer will jump in my arms with trust. Why? Because after one run in obedience, utility I think, I put my arms in the air slightly "yeah all done" and Ember thought I wanted her to jump into my arms. So she jumped sideways and hit my body slightly above my waist with her body. You can not at any time pick up or hold your dog in the air in the obedience ring so I didn't put my arms out to catch her(I almost did).

Ember thinking I was going to catch her did not brace herself for landing, hit my body and slide down it, fell sideways onto the mat with a thud.

She was not hurt but the look she gave me could had burned a hole in steel.

She will jump up still but she makes darn sure I'm ready and that I'm going to catch her.
