Genetic Problems in Sablemerles??????

I'm not sure if Madi has any merle in her lineage or not. I still haven't gotten her papers as I'm still trying to figure out a papered name for her :o

Not sure if we're going to breed or not. Just something we've thought about. It's a lot of responsibility and we need to make sure we're up for the challenge :)

And people wanting to breed should buy the Sheltie Coat Color Chart that Sheltie Talk (the book) produced. It is wonderful!

And, on that website,

A shaded sable is also called a tri-factored sable. That means that unlike a pure for sable (which can only produce sable and whites), it can produce tri-colors.

Has anybody heard the term "Mahogony Sable" or is it just another term for a shaded sable?
 
I've heard of it, I'm pretty sure their the same, although some shaded sables may look reder than others so maybe that would be a mahogany sable.

My parents sheltie is a shaded sable but very dark, I wouldn't call him mahogany.
 
Changing Colors

CeCe, is almost 7 monthes old now, and it seems like she has changed colors everyday since we got her. Her mother was a bi-black and her father a pure sable. She has bits of black on her, but she definately has that reddish coat coming in on her back. I love it! She is going to be a gorgeous Sheltie when she grows up.
 
Sadie's coat colour has also changed quite a bit since she was very young.

Sadie's mother is sable, I think she'd be classified as a pure for sable, she has very little dark fur in her coat and is more honey coloured. Sadie's father is a tri colour. Sadie was the only Sable in her litter, of the other three two were bi black and one was a tri colour. In the previous litter there were 5 pups, 4 sables and one bi black.

When sadie was very young she was very much like her mother in both personality and colouring. Now at 10 months old she's turned very red and also has much more dark fur than her mother. I'm wondering if she's going to be a shaded sable when she gets older. Sadie's personality is very sassy, in much the same way as her mother :lol:

My parent's sheltie is a shaded sable but it wasn't till he was about 4-5 that his fur turned really dark. It was really beautiful when he was younger with a lot of red fur mixed in.
 
I had never heard of shaded sable before this group. I guess my girl Marlie would be a shaded sable since almost all of her topcoat on her back is black. I will have to figure out how to attach a picture to see if all of you agree with me. I find all of this very interesting!
