It's been a long time since we had a puppy and I need some suggestions for toys. I'm sure we will have plenty of them,but what is good to start with?

The Kong made specifically for puppies, the Kong Wubba, and a Hol-ee roller have all been big hits with my puppy. She also loves her rope toy (it's a durable one, otherwise she eats the strings) and pretty much any (once again, durable) stuffed toys.

Ditto all of these. Just start with one of each kind of toy- a rope for tugging, a stuffed toy, a ball of some sort for fetching. You'll figure out which kind your dog prefers pretty quickly. Mine loves stuffed toys.. for tugging and playing fetch. We also have a hol-ee roller that she loves. Ok, my dog pretty much loves ALL toys.. lol. Just make sure they are pretty good quality, don't have any buttons or weird parts a puppy can chew off easily and swallow. I recommend stuffing-less toys to start off with in case your puppy likes to disembowel stuffed toys. I lucked out in that department and my dog has yet to destroy a toy!

Thanks for the suggestions. My current Eskie tears apart most stuffed toys. I will have to get a puppy kong and some others for both dogs. Milo has not been playing with toys lately, but I'll bet when the puppy toys come out he will be interested in toys again.

My Laddie loves his "Nylabone" it is not the clear colored on, it is a solid white color with little rough spots on it. He also love this "toy" I got him from the dog training school, they are old milking udder funnels, made out of a very durable black rubber, he adores that thing. In looks, it reminds me of those gasoline funnels you use to fill up the lawn mowers.
Dogs each have their own certain toys they love. Ruutu LOVES squeaky tennis balls, but if they don't squeak, he hates them. Mine also like corduroy toys and fuzzy toys. I recommend getting a wide variety while you learn what your pup loves. As some mentioned, a kong and the puppy goop will be amazing resource for you. Mine loves it to the point if I leave the goop out he'll paw it or bump it with his nose on the shelf. Wait til he sees I got him turkey flavor this time. I also recommend you watch your new addition intensely while it plays. Any toys that rip, immediately pick up and throw away or re-sew (we do this one often esp. with Petsmart toys..) I also recommend some without a lot of stuffing as some don't like the stuffing or can't like it because it's too much to fit in their mouth especially at a young age.
ETA: Rope toys are amazing as well, but you have to keep a watchful eye on them as the strings do and will come off and go in puppy's mouth. We have to pull them out of Ruutu's mouth often when playing.

Our toes and fingers are a favorite...which is hardly allowable but he doesn't quite remember that fact.
Truth is, as long as our pup has lots of options, he is happy. His 2.5 seconds of attention span drives him from one two to another quicker than you can blink. So we load him up with about 4 different stuffed toys to jump to.

Bambi pretty much liked all the toys mentioned, but one of her favorites was a pair of my husbands old tube socks tied together for tugging. She could get ahold of the knot in the middle and just shake, shake, shake, some times shaking so much it just wrapped around her head, then it became a new toy, as she tried to figure out how to get "that thing" off her head and neck. If I was too busy to play when she was ready, she just used the knot to pick it up and throw it like a ball, the shaking gave it momentum so she could then chase it. She was hilarious too watch.

Cardboard tubes and crisp packets are favourites here
I gave up on Kongs a while ago as my two just don't seem to see the point. I do give them anything I crochet that turns out wrong, so they are currently playing with a stuffed elephant I made that didn't turn out as it should. They have a hard job destroying that, which is good.
