Just curious did you rescue in Ohio, at Precious Secrets Sheltie Rescue, by chance?
Hi Kate,
Lady was originally from a mill in Missouri. The sheltie rescue in St. Louis rescued several shelties from that mill, but my understanding was that they didn't have enough foster homes for them all. So they ended up with several other rescues/shelters. Lady and one other female came to a no-kill shelter in Iowa City. Two went to Minnesota Sheltie Rescue (One, Abbott, is still there--you can check out his bio on their site. He's a cutie!) I'm not exactly sure where the others went. According to the people who rescued her in Missouri, Lady was the shyest one of the bunch. She made a lot of progress, but never really got over it. She would eventually come to me for treats, but never for attention. At first, she wouldn't even make eye contact with me, but she got to a point where she would look right in my eyes when I talked to her, and she seemed to enjoy some petting and scratching. It was a long road, for sure. I think some people thought I was crazy for dealing with her issues (including never really getting the potty training thing down!), but I loved her for who she was. Of course I hoped she would progress even more..I hoped she would become more of a companion to our other sheltie, but she just couldn't completely get over her fears. I just hope that in her own way, she knew she was safe and loved.
