.If I do keep him only on his dog food will that keep his size in control? If both his parents are standard size and he is not overfed will his growth eventually slow down?

Nope nothing you can do to keep him insize. He will be as tall as he grows just like people. There are some studies that show early neutering increases height but if they are going over they are going over neuter or not.

Birch has insize parents- 15 1/4" and 14 3/4" and he will be lucky to stay in.

Do some shelties grow really fast early on and slow down later? Is there particular foods that tends to make them grow faster too? I'm not raising him for competition or anything but don't want a big dog either!

Some do depends on the lines. However, across the board add 4" at 3 months and that is close to adult height. At 5 months add 1" for females and 2" for males and that is adult height.

If I knew of a way to feed them to make them not grow or grow I would do it. Last 2 puppies, we grew out here for show, one too small and one to big. So believe me I would do it.

That's a reassurance...at least he'll just fall around 16" Guess it's the same with human kids though...more meat = more growth. But then what else can we feed dog if not meat? Or maybe Mozart's body has just made use of all the nutrients in the excess Kraft singles I fed him last week!
