Has Anyone's Sheltie Puppy Howled?

I have had 3 Shelties that howled or I called it singing, my 22 month old Storm howles when I first come in to get my attention. Love it when they do it.

I've been told that my Cosmo has started howling when he's out the back, totally new thing, I've yet to witness it. A couple of children have said or called him a wolf, so he may just be taking it to heart.

Tommy sings. He puts his head back rocks back and forth on his front feet and "Aaaaaaooooooooaaaaaaaoooooooaaaaaaaoooooooo!"

What's especially funny is he only does it alone. I very rarely catch him at it. And I can't ever get him to do it when I'm around.

He's 8 1/2 years old and has done this his whole life.

Casey howls when he is playing with his duck stuffed toy. When he bites down on the toy it quacks and he howls/signs to the top of his lungs. I love it but I tell him all the time that shelties don't howl! he's my third and the first two boys never howled. It's a hoot!!

I will always remember the first time Koji howled. I think we had him for a day ot two. He was tired, but fighting it like children do. I put him in the crate and he was still grumbling, so I threw a blanket over the crate. The noise I heard then, I couldn't even identify. Me and then hubby, was wondering what it was and where it was coming from. Imagine our surprise when we realized it came from the crate.

I wish I could video him, but he only does it as a separation anxiety bit. So I hear him howling when I go walk Miko and sometimes when I leave. 6 years later and he still does it. I still find it adorable....except when he does it at 2-6am when I take Miko out. :rolleyes2: I live in an apt, so I feel so bad.

I can't recall if the breeder said if any of hers have howled before, but has told me it's not uncommon. I really wish I could get it videoed one day.

Here are my two girls that howled. They have been my only one's that "sang".

My one girl is gone- the bigger one and Maggie is now almost 17 and she rarely even barks any more. Loved it when they sang for me.

I felt like I was looking at dark versions of Sarah and Ida while watching this! That's almost exactly how they sound! They'er so sweet!

One day I put the dogs outside to play wile I ate lunch. After a while I heard a strange noise. It was so weird. It sounded like a cross between a wolf and a cow giving birth. I went out front to investigate. Maybe there was dying cat? But it sounded like it was coming from my back yard. But by the time I got to the door, it stopped. A few days later I heard it again. So I went to the back, and as soon as I got there it stopped again. About a week goes by and I hear it again, but instead of going to the back door I look out the bedroom window. What do I find? Jody sitting in the middle of the yard with his head tilted back letting out a huge howl for no apparent reason. He'd never howled before. It would start off low pitch then get really high, he really did sound like some weird wolf-cow thing. It was too funny!

stealth:winkgrin:

first recording of Dixie singing didn't even have Dixie in the video....
then when I got the tablet, I set it up so it would record while I was out of the room....
need to do it again as I believe that Dixie has backup singers now......:pop

Only once, that I heard at least. I was walking to the store, he was resting in his yard, he noticed me gone, then he started that loud yelp, that developed into a nose in the air, long, drawn out howl. I did not want to laugh, but, it was cute. He has not done that since.

Sheltie Howl

It probably is a howl but we call it singing. My wife plays the piano and they( Nala and Mischa) go bananas singing along. Their favourite number is Jimmy Shand's "the bluebell polka". We've had 5 bitches and they have all sung along to the piano! All the best, Dave and Helen.. frae Bonnie Scotland.
