Hepatic Encephalopathy???

Better and better.....

Since he has been on the lactulose he is a whole new dog! He actually jumped up on the bed yesterday by himself. He seems to be stopping in head rubbing and endless pacing. He still as la-la moments but nowhere near as severe as before. And he is starting to enjoy walks again.

I am so encouraged by this.

So memo to file...to anyone with dogs with a liver condition, make sure you ask your vet about lactulose!!!! I discovered this on another forum then asked my vet.

Sometimes we just have to be proactive and figure things out ourselves. Our vets can't and don't know everything about every condition. Thanks to the internet!

I can't tell you how happy I am to hear this! You and Bacca are always in my thoughts, I'm so glad you've found something that is helping him to improve. :hugs

What wonderful news to come home and read about. Fingers crossed that this is the answer to the question you have struggled with for so long.

It's wonderful to read about Bacca feeling like his old self. I hope this is the answer to a lot of your questions regarding his health.

Silaria

Thank you for your warm thoughts. I have no illusions though. Today he's in a good space, but tomorrow.......with this condition you just don't know.

Some days he eats, some days he doesn't. Feeding him meds is a constant challenge. He requires two pills twice per day, plus a squirt of lactulose 2-3 times per day. I have to keep cycling my med feeding program around and around. Some days it works. Some days not. He is SO timed out on being fed meds, he fights me everytime.

He certainly is better on the lactulose. But truly, this is just a stop gap. He could live 6 months or 6 years. We really don't know.

Tonight I have to try to convince him to be groomed. After his skin funk issue last spring, he resists it big time because it hurt him. So baby steps again, just like with a new puppy.

Hey Barb,
I am so glad that today was a good day !
Sending lots of hugs your way !
Give the boys extra pats from Treesa and I
:yes::hugs

Better and better and better!

The Lactulose is making all the difference.

He is alert again...no longer bumping into walls, appetite is mostly back and his skin condition is great! His coat is growing back and feels silky soft again. Undercoat finally growing

He still has the rat tail syndrome unfortunately. It pretty pathetic.

Bad news is that he is still squeamish about being groomed. He had so much pain before that its taking a lot of time to get him back to accepting again. So I do baby steps. Just a little bit every 2nd or 3rd night. One nail, one paw, one ear.

He is also too damn smart about his meds. I'm back to forcing them down his throat. Thank you to whoever gave me the trick (Randi???) for blowing on his nose. It actually works.

Stupid thing is Indy the Scavenger Dog thinks I'm giving Bacca treats! He goes ape thinking he is missing out on something! I thought about shoving a couple of things down his throat a few times so that maybe he would get the picture! :gaah But I can't do that either, because Indy is on a weight control these days. No more treats for you, buddy!
