Hip question

Hi everyone! I have a little girl Sheltie named Maya. She is now 22 weeks old and I notice that she has a tendency to "hop" with her back legs sometimes when she is outside running along. I may be over-reacting, but I am concerned that she may have a hip problem. Since this in my first Sheltie, I am not familiar with how they run. She doesn't seem to have any pain but... Please let me know if this is something I should be concerned with. Thanks!

Welcome dswoape

I would say if it 's something that concerns you it is always best to check with the vet. It's pretty difficult to give you info on something only you can actually see. Chances are since she appears to not be uncomfortable with it, it may be nothing. But better to ask and find it's nothing than to not question.
Good luck and welcometo you and Maya.:smile2:

Smoke always hopped instead of running, as a matter of fact he only recently started running more "normally" here at 1 year of age. It seems to have coincided with us starting agility class, like he has realized hopping won't get him anywhere fast :wink2: Our mini Aussie Apollo was a hopper when we brought him home @8wks, but he outgrew it a lot faster, by about 16 weeks.

I agree with Elaine, though, if you're concerned it can't hurt to have the vet check it out. Better safe than sorry :smile2:

Don't want to scare you but please get your puppy checked by a vet.
My puppy was only 6 months old when I discovered her lifting her hind leg. I went to my vet for investigation she was x-rayed and it turned out she had Medial Luxated Patella - knee dislocation in both hind legs. Most probably inherited.

I was advised to get her started on short regular walks, no jumping or running. Hydrotherapy is also strongly advised.

I do hope this is not the problem but do not wait get it checked.

Yes, hopefully it is nothing, but I think a vet visit/xrays are in order. If there is a problem, there are many good treatments these days, but the earlier started, the better.
Good luck!

I would say get it checked out. has she shown any reluctance to go up or down stairs? that was one of the things that my older rescue sheltie had problems with that made me take her to get checked out.

I agree with everyone here. I would definitely have your pup checked. My one-year-old began hopping on one back leg around 6 months and it appeared on xrays that he had either chipped a bone in his knee or fractured it. :eek2: Fortunately when we took him to a canine orthopedist that wasn't the case, and a course of anti-inflamatant completely cured him.:biggrin2: I now give him a glucosamine/condritin supplement daily. But you'll feel better (and so will he) if you know it's nothing. Good luck, and let us know what happens! :wink2:

I am happy to say that Maya was checked over by our vet after her spaying and so far it seems her hips are fine. She runs like lightening and plays with her big sisters (65 lbs and 100 lbs) very actively. I will keep an eye on her, however. Thanks to all of you for your advise.
