House training?

In the past I've had pups which my parents and I have attempted to house train using methods other than crate training.

Newspaper training seemed to just teach the dog that it was OK to potty in the house.

Rubbing the dogs nose in it not only doesn't work (just ask my dad), but seemed to encourage "poo eating". "That's a treat? Great! thanks for pointing it out!"

I'm blanking on other methods that my parents have attempted over the years to train the puppies we've had. But most of them were epic failures.

When I got my new pup a few months ago I decided to become more enlightened than my parents were, and decided to combine "Bell Training" and "Crate Training". Which worked wonders.

Vash quickly learned not to potty in the house with the crate training, It took about 4 days total for him to start signaling me when he had to go to the bathroom. After that we had 1 day where Vash decided he wasn't going to ring the bell, or whine to tell me he had to go potty and instead he would bark. He had never barked before, so I wasn't picking up on his signals of "potty" I just thought he was being a sheltie, and on that 1 day we had 7 accidents.

After that, the only time Vash has gone potty in the house is when was sick and physically incapable of holding it until I came home.

So I highly recomend crate training. The amount of cash you spend on an adjustable crate will easily pay for itself in the amount of cash you spend on natures miracle and time you spend cleaning up messes.

You'll still need about a gallon of natures miracle or simple solution to start with though.

Ember was a breeze to hose train, but Phoenix! Let's just say him and I are struggling with house training. :( I take him out every hour to every two hours. He always goes, but sometimes after coming back inside and playing maybe ten minutes, he'll potty again in the house! He is being crate trained, but sometimes he'll just go in his crate. :( He was getting better, but yesterday he decided the house was the potty and he went 4 times in the house and twice in the crate. I did take him to the vet today, and the vet said his bladder is just small and that boys are harder to potty train. Is that true?

Did your vet run a urinalysis to test for a urinary tract infection? Its rare for dogs to pee in their crate. His potty training issues sound a lot like when Bailey was a puppy and had a UTI. If ur vet didnt do a urinalysis, I would bring a urine sample in. Itll be easier on you and hm to know if you're dealing with a medical issue or a behavioral issue.

I'd have to go with crate training, too. Crates are great. Not only for potty training, but they give you a safe place to put your pup when you can't be with him. Besides, dogs like to have their own den. Ainsley still sleeps in hers and I don't have to put her in there; she goes in on her own. It's her safe place.

Cranberry was easy- crate- in/ out- asking at the back door within the first week home. maybe girls are easier but I don't think it can get easier than that.

All of mine have been easy.... Katie came house broken and only had 3 accidents in her first week with us and after that none. Zak was really easy, he only pooped once and pee'd a few times. I make sure with puppy's to take them out after eating, playing, sleeping.
I still took him out almost every hour. Crates are great to have for training.

Could it be that Phoenix is so very distracted with the fact that Ember & also the family, that he just goes when the urge arises?

I know that Trapp was a breeze to housetrain,as really Earnhardt is not a distraction. He pretty much is sedate when it came to Trapp as a puppy.I spent alot of time, every hour or so outside with Trapp. Not just for potty breaks, but also play time.
When he did potty,I praised him.

Now when Jasper came home,he was a real stinker about pooing here in kitchen. He never pooped on the carpet, but always in the kitchen.Like he was going off to do his deed, than come back in the living room to be with the rest.

He would poop in the kitcen 95% of the time, even after being outside.STUBBORN!!!

So one day,I just took it all under thought, and went back to puppy 101...and started staying out a long time with him.Taking notes on times of his last poop episode.

The very first few times he did poop outside,I praised the dickens out of him.Well he finally learned that pleasing mom,and getting a treat was the best.Once the light clicked in his little stubborn head...he was good to go~

I have to say having a regular schedule and lots of praise is what did it for saidy. the crate didn't work since she is a puppy mill dog and had no problems with going in her crate. So regular schedule, 6:30 when DH gets up for work every morning we go out and when she was still learning ever two hours, then every three hours and so on. We always would say go potty and give lots and lots of praise when she would do it so she learned that going potty out side was a good thing and what we wanted her to do when we say "go potty".

Everyone has given you excellent advice so I don't have much to add to that, except it is VERY IMPORTANT !! to REMOVE THE PUPPIES COLLAR BEFORE PUTTING HIM IN THE CRATE !! Hi could get it stuck in the crate and choke himself...When Gypsy was still owned by my neighbor I went to get her in the morning from my neighbor she was getting ready for work and Gypsy was in the crate when I went to get her, her tag was stuck in the crate and she was struggling good thing I got there when I did or it could've killed her.
