Housebreaking

The girls are 6 months now so I know they should have been house broken by now but we got them at 5 months and they were still going on newspaper and the breeder even had newspaper in the kennel:no:
But thats in the past and we are working at it even if it means walking a half hour in the rain :uhoh:
I will post pictures soon now that they are 6 months I want some different picutres because they have grown alot

OH .......When do you guys think they will be able to hold it 10 hours right now they hold it 8 hours right now I bring them to work but I dont want to do that when it gets to freezing.

Each dog is an individual but there is a general formula that people go by regarding how long our furkids should be able to go.. it's something like 2hrs + 1 hr for each month of age. I think there is a cap on it. Deja is 18 months old but I don't think she can hold it for 20 hours.. :eek2:
 
Well I haven't left Vash out of his pen while he's home alone mainly because he's been eating my carpet when he gets bored. That said, I thought i had him potty trained fairly well. Then this morning I woke up, took him down stairs and was putting his leash on to take him out and he just decided to pee on the kitchen tile floor.

I suppose it could've been an actual accident, the schedules been off lately. The worst part of it all is that at first I didn't know what he was doing and when I realized I immediately opened the door and sent him out. But I kind of felt like for the first few moments i told him "Hey I don't mind if you do that here"

I thought the house breakin thing was going good but today they were loose in my bedroom and Im watching them and sure enough Izzie (the smaller one)starts sniffing but i dont say anything because lately Ive been jumping on them for no reason so they were getting afraid to sniff or sit besides my Lab threw up in the bedroom so I thought she was sniffing that and before I knew it she squats and I jump screamed I couldnt help it and I grab her and I literally scared the **** out of her and there was a little trail :(
Took her out and she didnt pee or anything ARRRG:confused2:
So take them back in and back in the kennel
I thought catching them in the act would help But she had just gone out an hour ago I wasnt expecting her to have to go:(
I caught her in time well almost and now I guess I have to be more vigilant
 
:lol:This morning I was walking the girls and.......give me a minute I'm alittle bit choke up.....They peed quickly as they do every morning Izzie pooped and I waited for Bella. She wanted to play and I told her no Potty in a firm tone well she ran off and got a ball and walked over ....I lowered my head and made eye contact and said No go potty.....she looked at me and started sniffing and low abd behold she pooped I was estactic, elated, and soooo proud I couldnt believe it it was sooooo cute. I mean she looked at me like she understood the word Im I crazy:lol:

Sounds like your girls are coming around. I had 2 shelties also littermates that had been paper trained and it was sheer hell getting them trained to go outside. I didn't think it would ever happen, it took months. It's only been a month you are making real progress. I don't blame you for being ecstatic. Great job!
 
yeah, nothing but patience. With a new pooping and peeing machine in the house I feel I already forgot how much trouble my 1 year old was... well he really was not trouble at all... but we just have to stick to routine and be patient. And you are right- sniffing and circling means you are soo going outside...
 
OK so even though I have had dogs my other two boys came to us from a rescue so the housebreakin thing was done.
So this might be a dumb question but when do I know they are house broke?
I mean Izzie had an accident after an hour of bring inside and she had just peed outside. So now I take them out after an hour or put them in the kennel after they have been in the house an hour before I take them out.
So how do they know not to go in the house if I always take them out?
I mean they know the word potty and know it stands for number 1 or number 2
But HOW do they know to tell me to go out if when they are in the house they are confined to a room and cant get to the door that has the bells?
or how do I teach them to let me know???? A friend of mine told me her shelties never learned so she just takes them out every 3-4 hours or less.
