Housebreaking

being inseparable is not a good thing with puppies. It will benefit your future training if you try and spend quality time with each of your pups separately and keep them apart more. Most trainers do say it is very difficult to train 2 puppies at once, no matter what breed. Whoever told you that shelties are difficult to housebreak does not know this breed. Shelties as a breed are easy to train, housetraining or anything else.
If you sure it is not UTI, consistency is your key. As long as your pups know not to pee in the crate you will make it work even if you have to keep them "crate- outside, crate- outside" for next 2 weeks.

I've been keeping my two 10-wk-old puppies mostly in the crate and doing the whole taking them outside every time they come out or go back in and at all the other times they specify... they will bark from their cage to let me know they need to go out, but when they are out(even in a somewhat confined area) that don't alert me... If I keep them up on a couch or in a chair where they can't jump down they will whine to let me know they need to go out, but when they are running around they don't ever stop and go to the door or whatnot. They've had a few accidents in the house that are of course cleaned up right away, mostly pee's, only 2 poops... we've caught most of them in the act and do the screaming ah-ah and run them outside then praise them... they always go when we're outside right away as soon as i tell them to potty or poop... the going on command part is nice. Does it just take time for them to remember to warn you when they are not in a closed-in area?

I just wish they'd alert me so I could have them out of their crate more. I really should implement the bell system... anyone have any recommendations on where they got their bell from?

I used to have these aroun quite often,as I used them in crafting.They can easily be purchased at a Hobby Lobby or Michaels.Possibly Walmart would have a nice sized bell,now that it is holiday times.

I have only had one positive experiance using a bell with a foster we had some years back.Sometimes it works,other times it won't.

I know it did not work with Earnhardt when he was a pup,all he did was chew the string that hung from the door knob,them play with the bell once it was loose~

My dog is bell trained. I just bought a cheap bell from Michael's (the craft store) and attached it to a ribbon. It cost less than 5 bucks.

I like the bells because I can be anywhere in my house and hear her ring the bell. When you first bell train, it can be very annoying. The puppies will constantly play with the bells, but you have to take them out every time they ring it in order for them to associate the bells with going outside. When I first started training Bailey, she would ring it 15-20 times a day. Eventually, the fun wears off for them and they'll only ring it when they really have to go out. Good luck!

lol@15-20 times a day! I feel like I'm close to that now. I take them out a lot... when I yell, "no" when I catch them they don't stop or anything so I don't think they get it yet... but they just barked from their crate to let me know they needed to go...
