How Often Do You Bathe Your Sheltie?

I give Madison a bath every Sunday. Right now it's not too bad, but I know that as her hair gets longer and fuller it's gonna be more work, so my hope is to get her used to it now so it won't be so hard later ;)

She does ok in the bath. She'll stand still for the most during her bath. She does try to escape though when I go to grab the shampoo.

She LOVES the hair dryer though LOL She'll sit/lie perfectly still and close her eyes while I dry her. I think she just loves the warmth of it. She's always sitting in front the furnace vent when it's blowing.

Yesterday she got her nails clipped and then I used my nail file to get rid of the sharp edges, so it was like a spa day for her :lol:

Everyone always told me they only need a bath every 3 to 6 weeks but I bathe Shelbie once a week or every week and a half. She LOVES to get dirty and messy :) She also loves to run through the sprinklers and get all wet and smelly. Since she sleeps with us we have to keep her smelling good right? Shelbie loves the hairdryer too!! She also knows that after every bath it is time for a new bow so she will sit patiently and wait:biggrin2:

It is perfectly OK to allow your dog to swim in natural water as often as he likes (within reason) but what is not OK is to wash your dog using soaps or shampoos very regularly. Using human shampoos on dogs leads to an imbalance of sweat, and they would be likely to develop dry, itchy skin. Having said that, using mild human shampoos is fine used at a frequency of once per month. However, I would personally recommend dog-specific shampoos and these will have a recommended usage detailed on the bottle, but this would definitely not be more than once every several weeks. In some cases shampoos can be medicated, such as for specific skin-disorders, and the frequency of use for these would depend on the condition.

I bathe my 2 Shelties when they need it..Not as often as some do. But I brush them a lot...

I'm afraid I only bathe my boy every 3 months or so. Usually after I have him boarded (and he smells stinky). Whenever I see him get dirty, an hour later he is clean again! I promise, he doesn't smell :smile2:

But I do use a grooming spray with a little bit of soap in it that keeps him fresh

We do baths here

about every 3-6 weeks, depending on Hunter's "aroma" :lol: He has the typical "self-cleaning" Sheltie fur, so he seems to shed alot of the dirt he picks up. If he starts to have a funk or his whites are getting dingy, it's tub time!
But tell me, is there anything more pathetic than a wet sheltie? The look they give you almost says "I love you, why do you torture me so? :cry:"

Same here, about every 6 weeks unless someone stinks! I try to do all 3 on the same day that way I only have to clean the bathroom once! I can't wait for my husband to get the utility sink hooked up in the basement! That will be so nice!!
 
:eek2: Every week is way, way too much bathing. They should not be givin a bath more then every month :no:. You are robbing them of natural oils to protect their skin, dogs do not have sweat glands. If they get a little dirty from play just rinse their bottoms off. If they roll in what not then thats another story, but do pick up so they don't:o. I don't bath them any more then once every three months, and mine do not smell at all. I use a watered down grooming spray everytime I brush them and that freshens them up:cool:. My Zack is a real pigpin and i have to hose him of in the spring several times a day somtimes. I only do his feet, legs and maybe tummy.

Once A Month

I try not to bath her more than once a month, once in a while she might go only 3 weeks if she gets herself really mucky and dirty.

I've tried making her wait 6 weeks for a bath but no amount of spray on doggie refresher seems to help, it just masks the odour for 10-15 minutes.

She is getting better as she gets older though, she's approaching her one month mark and isn't smelling too bad, maybe I'll be able to wait longer to bathe her as time goes on
