How often do you feed your shelties?

Sandstorm has been eating Nutro-Natural Lamb and Rice since a puppy. He transitioned to adult food about a month ago. Lately he would not eat in the a.m., so now we feed him once a day, early eve. We realized we were also feeding too much, and should feed him a cup less than the bag says to. So now we feed him 2 cups in the eve. When we were feeding 3 cups, he always left food. Now he eats it all. How many of you only feed once a day? I remember the breeder saying alot of dogs only eat once a day. Just wondering what most people do with their adult dogs. Sandstorm does not seem like he is super hungry in the a.m., but I wonder if feeding a cup in the a.m. and then a cup in the p.m. would be better.

I feed once a day, in the morning.

Even two cups is a lot unless he is 18" tall and 35 pounds. My Collie only got 1 1/2 cups when she was eating kibble. Now she gets a single leg quarter (or equivalent).

Thanks, Sandstorm is big-and tall. Last time at the vets was about 2 months ago-he was 30 lbs.

I feed my dogs twice a day but they only get the equivalent of 2/3 of a cup (1/3 cup at each meal).

If you are using the portion sizes on the bag to guide you, they are typically too much food for any dog. Also, the amount of food recommended does not take into account any treats you may give the dogs through the course of the day. One reason my pups get so little kibble is because they get treats because we are training or 'just because'.

Just like when we eat, if we want to snack later in the day, we need to save the calories somewhere else.

We feed MMM twice a day. Somewhere between a 1/3 and a 1/2 cup each time. It get adjusted kind of seasonally according to his activity.

McKinley STARES at us at food time: 7AM and 4PM

We still sometimes get the noon time stare from his puppy~hood memory of lunch!

Cleveland only ate once a day though, first thing in the morning.

I dunno, still seems like a lot. Sadie is approx. 17.5" and weighs 23-25 lbs and she gets 1 Cup of food per day. She never goes hungry (except now, but that's the medication she's on making her feel hungry).

If he's still not eating all of his food I'd consider decreasing it more, to 1 1/2 cups per day.

Everyone gets fed in the morning; 1 cup each for Emma and Figaro, 2/3rds cup for Sasha, and 1/2 to 2/3rds cup for Newton and Indy. Indy and Newton get a second feeding in the evening. Newton rarely finishes his food, if anything distracts him he leaves it. If we're not careful, Sasha vacuums up the rest. She's getting a bit squishy at her butt, so we're being more vigilant about her poaching.

Currently we feed kibble in the morning and raw in the evening. It is kind of stupid, but we still have kibble. I'm considering donating the kibble or freezing some to keep it longer (for future out-of-town trips).

Abigail - 18" and 28 lbs. I feed her 5/8 a cup of kibble and 5 oz of raw a day.

Duncan - 13" and 11.5 lbs. He gets 3/8 cup of kibble and 2 oz of raw.

Pierre - 11" and 8 lbs (Papillons are very leggy and daintily built). He gets 1/4 cup of kibble and 1.5 oz raw.

We will switch to once a day raw feeding soon-ish. I want to find another meat source before the final switch.

McKinley, Emma here

So the Sheltie stare doesn't work for you either? I try it but Mom and Grandpa just ignore me. They think I would only have 1/2 cup twice a day. Of course, I do get a biscuit at 10:00 for morning coffee break (Grandpa's idea), afternoon coffee break (again Grandpa's idea), and at 7:00 for a bedtime snack. sometimes I get something in my hide-a-squirrel or Kong. Grandma used to look after me real good when Mom was at work, but now we don't have Grandma, so I try and make Mom do the same. She's not quite the same soft touch.

I guess all we can do is keep up the Sheltie stare and see if it really works. I hope I don't have to only have one meal a day. That makes for a long day.
