Huge Sheltie...

Thanks for the lovely comments on alfie :) Is it possible bigger shelties are less nervous in general than standard ones? I love alfie's personality, and his size isnt a bother at all. Theres more of him to love I always tell him

My other sheltie ajax is at the top of the size limit measuring 16'' at the shoulder and 24lbs. (hes really not that big but his shoulder is not laid back so measures higher than it should). I call him the retro sheltie from the 60s. Hes the classic edition that hides behind furnitures and very nervous about meeting strangers.

Dickens is like that with strangers, and he's a big one. I think it's a breed trait. I wouldn't necessarily call it nervousness; more an excess of caution. He'll approach the stranger, particularly if bidden, but backs off if the stranger reaches out for him, or tries to get into his space. If he sees that his people accept the stranger, he'll do the same, after a few minutes of suspicion, and more often than not a bit of barking. However, if his people aren't around, forget it! One of my neighbors has been quite some time trying to pet Dickens over the fence; she's even tried giving him treats, but he'll have nothing to do with her!

I see, I thought maybe being big gives them a bit more confidence. Alfie will gladly eat off a strangers hand. Ajax won't allow my dad to feed him even though they've been living together for 3months now. He esp hate when strangers reach out for him like Dickens. But if you pretend he's not there he will come up and sniff you. Don't expect to be able to pat him though. Funny guy this one.

Big or small they are equally affectionate that's for sure.

Casey is 15.5 inches, 18 lbs and will go up to ANYONE. Annabelle is 12.5 inches, 15 lbs, and goes up to anyone as long as Casey does it first. Tara is maybe 16 inches 15 lbs and goes up to anyone. Clara is 13 inches, 12 lbs, and goes up to anyone. Bonnie is 14 inches, 17 lbs, and doesn't go up to anyone at all for any reason.
