It's not "important" its just a question of esthetics! We all strive for the perfect ear tip. The reality is that most of amateurs won't every get it exactly right.

We finally accept that our pups ears will tip or not, or tip too much and be hound ears

What you can do, is learn to groom to compensate a little. There is nothing like a well groomed Sheltie ear, tipped or otherwise. There are several great books on Sheltie Grooming. My favourite is the Illustrated Guide to Sheltie Grooming by Barb Ross. It gives suggestions on how to groom to compensate for less than perfect.

Don't rely on your groomer. In all the years that I've had a Sheltie I've only found one groomer that knew how to do ears.

If your breeder is close enough, he/she will probably help you out as well.
 
My poor little man!!

Calibers contraption came unglued lastnight, so I thought I'd take the moleskin off entirely just to give his ears a "breather". Well...As I took it of I niticed that a rash had started under the moleskin where the glue was...:cry: I feld so bad for him...I mean, it didn't seem to bother him all that much...a little bit of rubbing them on the ground, but even tho it doesn't show that much, it's gotta bother him...along side that...they're barely even tipped!! He looks up and me and *BOING!!!* they go straight up! :eek2: I'm still determined to work on them - but until the rash clears up I'm not really feeling the need to do anything to them right now. I took some of my neices rash cream and put some on where the rash was, and it did seem to help quite a bit...but boy do I feel bad! :( I think it was because his skin didn't have enough "breathing room" under the moleskin and glue. No more moleskin for me...I'm DONE with it! We'll just have to work with what we have when it comes time!

I would just glue the hair. Hair to hair. If they're tipping too high (or not at all), glue them (basically) to the hair right in front of the base of the ear. (It's the hair that stands in the way of you being able to see right into his ear.) Put a dab of glue on the tip of his ear, and touch it to the hair in front of the ear. With his ears breaking too high, you want to over compensate for a week or two.
 
Yeah, that's what I hope to do. He doesn't have too much hair infront tho...it's very short. And with this rash as a set back...by the time it clears up in time for me to re-glue, they'll be prick again - which means longer gluing for me....yay. :dead:
 
mine sometimes would get what looks like a rash from the tape, I think its more of an irration from taking it off then anything although some dogs are allergic to moleskin, glue and the glue remover. I would definatly go with the hair to hair glue method for a bit and let the inside of the ears rest. These ears are definatly frustrating at times!:smile2: Keep in mind some just wont tip no matter how long you do it, it depends on the ear type. On one of mine his ear leather is soo thick they are prick..I swear hes part corgi! I just finally gave up on his its not like he is showing or anything hes my dads love :)

Calibers ears do the same thing sometimes(if I understand correctly what you mean) I think that's just the way they go when they relax, altho, I'm not 100% sure I'm right about that fact. Here's the site that I went to when i first started gluing ears - I found it to be most helpful:

I would try bringing the tip of the ear closer IN tho, if you know what I mean...so instead of tiping the ear directly forward, tip it on an angle towards one another, and also I would brace the ears together at the top of his head if there is enough hair to do so. That may help a bit, but I'm not sure how much. It's worth a try tho! If you have a picture, see if you can post a link to it...we might be able to help you better if we can see exactlly what you mean.

Hope it helps. I know I will be using it as I am having problems with Maia's ears too and her breeder lives 16 hours away and does not recommend the mole skin right now.:no:
 
I need some advice on ear's too. I've been taping Darcy's ear's and now it seems I can't keep them taped more than 3 or 4 days. It's driving me crazy! I've shaved the inside and clean them before I tape and before it would stay a 1 wk to a 1 1/2 wk and now it seems everytime I turn around there undonw. It's driving me crazy. It's almost like they don't want to stay taped anymore.
 
mine do that everyonce and awhile...have you tried a product called skin-prep? you can get it at your local pharamacy..it comes in a wipe so you can just swipe inside the ear.

Shaving was probably not the best move, you want the tape to stick to the hair, not the ear itself. Let some of the hair grow back and then re-tape them.

You could also try gluing with out taping. Apply the glue along the inside of the ear on the side nearest the the middle of your pup's head from the point where you want the crease to be down to the base of the ear. Fold the ear down till the pups ear is almost touching her head.
