I think Lucy ate a bee.

As much as I try to stop her when I see her do this I think she actually ate one this time. She is now coughing/hacking a bit and has just turned extremely lethargic. Lucy looks like she wants to hack something up but won't. She walks really slow, keeps her head down and when I take her out (she usually barks like a nut) not a peep out of her. She just wants to lie down. Any ideas?

Did you ever notice how they always get sick after vet business hours? :no:
 
Smudge does this a lot - goes chasing after bees and red wasps. :uhoh: I always wondered what would happen to him if he "caught" one!

Can dogs be allergic to bee stings like people can? :confused2:
 
Ugh, I have no idea! The last time she did this the bee stung her tongue and she slobbered like crazy, I gave her some icy water in a bowl and she was fine about a half an hour later.

This reaction is very, very different. :(
 
How about calling the ER vet? This does not sound good to me. Maybe they could tell you what to do for her. I am so sorry.
 
I think Susan is right...call emergency.....the bee may not have been dead when she swallowed it and could have stung the back of her throat....you don't want her throat to swell. Call the vet.....be safe
 
Get her to an ER vet ASAP. Given how she is acting, it is no time to fool around wondering if she did eat it. If she is stung in the throat area, it will swell and she will NOT be able to breathe. This is considered a life-threatening situation or an anaphylactic reaction. She needs to be seen SOON! I worked for an allergist years ago who diagnosed anaphylactic reactions. This sounds like one.
 
I agree that a vet needs to see her. You can't take chances with things like this, given the way she's acting. Please let us know what happens.

Totally agree, get her to the vet. To hard to tell how serious these things are over the net.
 
I found a vet who will take her now. She's starting to shake and she can't bark anymore. Keep your fingers crossed.
