I thought I had a sheltie but could she be a collie?

I thought our dog was a sheltie but just took her to the vet and at 1year and 4months she is 18 inches tall and roughly 38 lbs..very lean though the vet said. We rescued her and thought she was a sheltie and she has stopped growing but hasn't filled out yet of course..extemely hyper ..gallops the back yard like a "bat out of hell" so to speak and barks non stop outside. Could she still be a large sheltie? Can they get that tall? her head reminds of a fox and she is sable in color
 
Yes, shelties can get that big. A few of our other members have some "little collies", they'er pure sheltie just huge! Could you post a pic? One of my shelties, Jody, is a little on the big side (just over 16"), but his head is shaped a bit like a collie's so people confuse him for one a lot.

BTW This is very common sheltie behavior.
 
Yep, my Asta is 18 inches and 30 pounds. 38 pounds sounds heavy to me for your dog, but maybe she has big bones? It does happen that they get this big. Enjoy your plus-size Sheltie! We love our big girl's size. :biggrin2:
 
The pups from the mill seizure are all sheltie but they fit the description of your dog. I actually met a sheltie at the garden center this summer that was the size of a collie bitch. Turned out it was a registered sheltie male but even it's head looked more collie to me. The breeder is well known and has a stellar reputation so it is a sheltie. Beautiful, in all sizes and colours.
 
My Dickens, at 14 months, is nearly 21 inches and 44 pounds; his mother was just about the same. They can indeed get big, and some get even bigger. Here's Dickens at one year. Every time I take him somewhere I hear "Lassie! Lassie!"

A Collie's head generally runs in the same plane as the snout, while the Sheltie's snout is on a different plane, and I believe the Sheltie's muzzle should be smoother and more rounded than the Collie's.
 
Oh yeah, they can get that big. A woman I know has two from a litter. One is 12" the other is 20". However, when I saw him, I did think he was a Collie due to the way his head was shaped. But the 12" looks just like a Sheltie. Same litter. LOL.

And my younger dog is 18". But he's very lean at 20lbs.
