And besides, who can't love the super cute Subaru commercials when the dogs are doing donuts in the parking lot, or what not? LOL.
Okay, I admit, I really wanted a Subaru WRX. Not sure if my stuff would fit as it's more narrow than my Mazda 3.
Try to suspend your disbelief for a moment - I used to drive a Nissan Sentra 2-door to shows. 
It was like the clown car at the circus when we got to a venue. People would stop and stare. The trunk was nice and roomy, but the dogs had to ride in the tiny back seat in harnesses.
The very worst trip in this vehicle included a border collie, a sheltie, and a keeshond, as well as three full-size people. It was about 180 miles each way with an overnight stay in a motel. Of course, my well-researched theory of dog show equipment: at least 10 times the weight of each dog in equipment. (And Neechee always had to have a jug or two of tap water from home or he would get violent diarrhea.)
This particular event was exciting because it was potentially the 3rd leg of Neechee's and Cammie's (the keeshond) CDs. So we were all excited. Excited enough to completely forget the people equipment. Oh, we remembered the folding chairs all right, but somehow left out the suitcases.
And you can tell it from the "new CD" photo that was taken at the show. I look extremely bedraggled. Thank goodness for Walmart and motel showers!
Seriously, now that I'm older and wiser(?), I'd go with a Ford Escape, since I live with a Ford mechanic.
Right now, we are stuck with a 2000 Nissan Maxima, which is NOT good for hauling dogs, and a 1993 Chrysler LeBaron convertible, which the dogs love when the top is down. Since I'm not looking at campaigning a dog in the near future, it's not much of an issue.
At one point, I was going to get a Cooper Mini for me & Neechee. They have a small dog safety seat as an option. Since it was just me & him, it would have made a lot of sense. Unfortunately, Neechee's passed, and I married a 6 foot 5 giant who doesn't like to be laughed at while getting into a small car.

I really want a small SUV. I'm been looking into the Nissan Rogue. The WV Tiguen, and The Ford Edge.
It's just me and Bailey, so I don't need a huge SUV. Something small with a nice trunk. Plus, I want 4-wheel drive for the rain and snow.
Right now I have a coupe and it's awful for traveling with just one dog. There is no cargo space and no room for a crate. It gets really crammed when I have to bring an overnight bag or if we are staying at my parents for a few days.
fingers crossed for something new at the end of this year!
We've had our Kia Soul for a year now and love it. Its a crossover or sport wagon so not as big an SUV but its very roomy.

OMG, I can just picture it. Especially on the trip where you forgot your luggage. Sadly, it's also the last thing on my mind, I always make sure I got everything for the dogs first.
I soooo wanted a Mini Cooper. But I don't know if a chair would fit in it, much less my small canopy. lol. I slowly had to step away from that car. It was sooo fun to drive though!
As for your 6'5" giant, come on, my 280lb 6'2" friend crawled out of my MR2 for years! Now, granted I think people would stare when he'd climb out, but still. He'd get in. Besides, I believe the Mini has TONS of leg room.
Head room, I'm not so sure. Get the convertible. lol.I'm loving reading all of these posts. Funny!

I'm resurrecting this thread because by the end of the year DH and I will be replacing his car (a 2003 Mazda Tribute--looks like a Ford Escape). We need something bigger. Currently both dogs ride in their crates which are belted in in the middle of the car. I didn't like them in the very back because the back of DH's car is straight up and down and any collision from behind would hit the crates (and the dogs). But that means there is only room for 2 people, and because the crates are secured, there's no taking them in or out.
And to add to that, we are likely going to have a third dog at some point in the future (probably in 1-2 years) and right now having 3 crates in the car plus our stuff is virtually impossible.
Also, my husband and I both drive 45+ minutes to work every day (in the opposite direction, unfortunately) and his car isn't particularly safe--has 160,000+ miles, and doesn't have 4WD (remember, snow/ice is new to us!)
All this to say that we are looking closely at the Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia, and the Mazda CX-9. I know, they're huge. But we want 3 crates, easily accessible, plus the option to still have backseats in use. Gas mileage isn't great (better than my husband's old car) but safety is more important for us.

It also includes photos of the car, cargo space w/seats up and cargo w/seats down. The spreadsheet includes over 40 vehicles. I'm happy to share with anyone who is interested, just let me know and I'll email it.

Subaru has dog option package- lots of different things/ compartments if you drive with your doggies.
Hubby is drooling over new model coming, without going into too many details, its has fuel cut off when airbags released, brakes overrides gas pedal when both pushed, there are some safety features on the road that car can estimate distance from other cars and new better ability see both sides etc. It still has low center gravity due to low set engine so car does not overturn easily and it sits on 19" tires.
