i have never shown a dog but i would love to get a sheltie and try showing it. Only problem is i have no idea how to go about showing a dog. i grew up with a Sheltie as our family pet and my first cousins owned his brother they were both family pets and both very inteligent dogs. If someone could give me some tips as to what to look for in a show puppy and how to get started in showing that would be very helpful.

There is so much involved, and reading what all of the respected breeders, show folks have to say here is something that is spot on. Whether it be conformation,agility,rally...any venue takes knowledge & many years of learning from someone that is willing to take a newbie under thier wings and mentor them.
I recently addred on to our canine family here. A Bi-Black. While he does come from a long line of champions in his linage,I was offered Blake because the breeder was not satisfied with his jaw line. To her it was not to her liking. He originally when first offered for sale, was only to a show home. But as he developed, she was not satisfied with his mouth.
So he came to me at 5 months,as a companion & agility prospect. Which he will in time I'm hoping develope into one heck of an agility dog. Now at going on 10 months, his mouth, jaw line is quite nice, but not as nice as some other dogs that are in conformtion ring. For me,all of ours are pets, they will lways be our companions.
I am not fortunate enough to have a mentor, someone to show me,and someone I can be side by side each day. Oh how I wished. So I do lots of reading, and pick the brains of folks I know here for info.
Getting an adult,as Clantyresheltie suggested I think is one you should look into seriously, that way you have the full deal, and not a puppy.
But as she has said, many quality puppies will not be offered to a lay person. They simply are kept by breeders,as they do have an agenda for a super, duper quality dog. They evaluate puppies at an early age,and know just what they are looking for.
Good luck in your venture. But in the meantime...educate yourself on the breed, read & keep asking questions. Go to shows, and if you are lucky enough you may find someone that will take you under thier wings.
