If I were to....

Don't think breed, think temperament - every dog is different and I would take Megan along to meet the dog on neutral ground and see what she thinks.

Definitely not a lab/retriever puppy. They are too boisterious for Shelties and would squash them in a nano-second.
I say this again and again but honestly that does not need to be the case, yes it will depend on the pup, but even bigger pups usually have the sense to be careful around smaller creatures, and a good owner should always make sure interactions are monitored and kept from getting rough.

Yes a dog allowed to play rough will try it with different dogs, but raised correctly just because a dog is a lab does not mean it will be too boisterous.

I keep saying it but Cadbury was playing with a sheltie at 12 weeks old. They played beautifully, he neither body slammed or bounced on her. They just played chase. She was leading the game and he was happy with that.

I have no concerns about bringing sheltie pup home and introducing him/her to Cadbury.

Perhaps Cadbury is the exception, but he can be trusted with any pup and for that matter any child.

Hmm, I think you'll know what I will say. It all depends on Megan and the other new dog. I agree with Lukabear in that you have to look at the temperament as oppose to the breed of the dog. Penny was a shepherd mix who grew up to be 95 pounds. She got along great with Rusty when we got him. They played all through their lives without any problems. She knew to play gentle with him when he was a pup. She was about a year and half awhen we got Rusty. If you really want a Golden and Megan can handle bigger dogs, I say go for it. Rusty doesn't have problems with bigger dogs, but he's not standard size either. lol

Again, I appreciate everyone's suggestions as I was curious what others had and what you all have done.

We're not rescuing or doing anything yet, but it's great to have all the input when or IF the time comes

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful suggestions . We had a Golden Retriever for 12 1/2 years before Megan and I would LOVE, LOVE nothing more than to have another one BUT they can be boisterous and may accidently hurt little Megan. However you know what's funny....growing up we had a beautiful sable male Sheltie AND 2 Rottweilers.

For the most part they got along famously, but once in awhile Sara would accidentally get too excited over playing fetch that she would run little Laddie Boy over. :o

Justice and Ember's Breeder has rottweilers and shelties. They get along great. The shelties boss the rotties around and are in total control. Most people don't realize while rottie are physical tough but they can be mental softies. They don't like harsh voices or corrections as a general rule. But they do take a firm and gentle hand to gain respect.

Rottweilers have herding roots too. They were used in Germany to drive cattle to market down the mountains and to protect the money on the way home. :smile2:

My dogs get along with most dogs. The ones they don't like are the ones that want to body slam them. That can be one of any breed. Justice loves and I mean loves Goldens. He will seek out and follow any Golden around. He is not that crazy about many Labs. He tells them off and then usually gets along ok. The biggest issue always comes when the other dog won't back off. Justce doesn't like bostons or any dog with pushed in faces. That goes back to a boston atacking him as a small pup. Diva hasn't met a dog she doesn't like. She likes body contact more than my other dogs and is submissive so she doesn't challanage any one.

That's the one thing I like about shelties they generally get along with most dogs. My JRT mix didn't get along with anything except shelties. WHich in the end is why I got one.:smile2:

Funny you should say that, my cousin has a rotty, a huge, un-neutered male who is also VERY well trained. He couldn't possibly been more gentle with Sadie. Last time they were together he followed her around everywhere and even layed down on his back and let Sadie jump all over him, biting his paws. They would bite each others muzzles in the gentlest fashion, it was amazing to see such an enormous dog (120lbs. +) be so gentle with my then 20 lb. sheltie. It was the cutest thing I'd ever seen.

Max, the rotty, it the sweetest guy. :smile2:

You can't really get a feel for how big he is unless you see him in person, but here's a photo of Max at my cousin's wedding last year. He was the ring bearer. :smile2:

OH what a beautiful Rotti Max is!!! I would LOVE to have a Rottie, a Golden, a Pit Bull, Boxer, ha ha..

The two female Rotties I grew up with, Sara and Greta were total lovers of other pets and adults, but NOT with children. Greta tolerated them but Sara had been teased and mistreated by them before my Mom rescued her so she remained afraid of them.

They are fabulous dogs that is for sure

Ah he is a handsome guy.

Here is my breeders frist rottie Grete at Sunday's 3rd b-day party. Grete is a Can/Am/UKC CH, has herding titles and obedience titles. She just took up agility this summer at 8yrs becasue she was bored and needed something to do. She is actually doing really well. Don't know if she'll ever compete but it keeps her busy.:smile2:

I'm not sure where Ember is in this picture? She must have gotten herself into trouble and needed a timeout.
