Golden Retriever, but now that I have one.... lol. They are a lot more work in the puppy phase than my shephard cross and sheltie were.

After Timber died, my son was dead set against getting another Sheltie. He felt that Timber could not be "replaced". So I "went through the motions" of looking at other breeds (as if!). My top picks were:
- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
- Papillon
- Miniature American Eskimo (yes, this is a real breed not a designer dog)
- Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
- Keeshond
I lean towards thick or long-haired dogs.
But yes, I did toy with the idea of a pug....can't help it....I love their smashed up faces!

Oh! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are great! I have never met one that wasn't thrilled to be in the company of its people. We actually considered one (well I did). But, we are so active with hiking and just around the yard and they didn't seem like they could or would want to keep up with us. And....my husband had that macho thing going on. Somehow, he didn't feel that walking a Cavalier would be "manly" enough for him. Sheesh....

I like cavs and tollers too. What cross them off my list:
Like Danigoat said I didn't think the Cavs are rugged enough for the outdoors. The ones I knew were loving but like their comfort.
Tollers is was the scream.
Oh my. I'll take shelties barking any day over that. A friend who has a small training school next to his home has a bunch of them 10 or so. We went to use his building for training and as we pulled into the yard, my friend says what is the aweful noise. It sounds like dogs are dying. Those are the Tollers.

Border Collie.
I figure when I retire, then I will get a border collie to keep me (and my shelties) company.

I don't think I could keep up with a border collie! Love them to bits, but I do like the fact that my Shelties can veg along with me!

well, always wanted a collie- but they're too big so got shelties 
had a cocker spaniel and Dad had some beagles when growing up- wouldn't go that route again. The first two dogs that were just mine were both mixes- can't go wrong with a mutt
thought when I had Danny (basset/cocker) that corgis were cool and that if I ever got a purebreed, it would probably be a corgi. oh well....
I've also known some nice papillons and a great pom.

Yup yup.
I forgot about mutts. Shelties are the only purebred dogs we have ever owned, except for Pepper the poodle. We had to give Pepper away because Julie had TERRIBLE allergies and asthma when we were younger. She grew out of both of them.

Depends on the mutt.
They tend to take on the characteristics of the breeds they have in them. Many breeds I would not touch and that includes their mixes. Jazz was a beagle/JRT mix and a great dog. A rescue I kept. Man was she a challenge. The nose and stubbornness of the beagle and the fire and prey drive of the JRT. A mix not for the faint of heart, I tell you.SuzieQ1960

If not a sheltie it would have to be a Chihuahua. Over the years I have had a couple of wonderful little chi boys and my current chi, ChiChi, is the cutest, funniest most lovable little thing. She is also a fierce little girl, a real "big dog" in a 4.75 pound package!
