My Buddy was a mutt. Great dog, great personality.
My Bosley was a mutt. The vet actually said he was a special needs and had a diminished capacity brain (I think that he how he worded it). He was sweet, but he was a handful. The only thing I was ever able to train him to was a good recall and sit your bum DOWN. I loved him and he was a good as a dog as he could be, BUT I would never want to go there again.

I take it your Golden must be a little work right now? How old is he/she? Even though our beloved Golden Tyler was a handful as a puppy, (although, our Sheltie Megan has been MORE a handful), at least your Golden worships the ground you walk on

I'm a herding breed person through and through. Now that Shelties have come into my life I really can't imagine not having one. Whiskey is a little more reserved than I like, but his intelligence and wit never ceases to amaze me. Now that Reagan is in my life...well I'm just wow'd by this dog.
But-- to stay on topic -- if I could not have another sheltie I would go back to Australian Shepherds. I like the off-switch. Both my shelties have personalities very similar to that of my aussies.

I love them too. I don't particularly like big dogs. The Scotia's seem to be a nice compromise....

Depends on the mutt.They tend to take on the characteristics of the breeds they have in them. Many breeds I would not touch and that includes their mixes. Jazz was a beagle/JRT mix and a great dog. A rescue I kept. Man was she a challenge. The nose and stubbornness of the beagle and the fire and prey drive of the JRT. A mix not for the faint of heart, I tell you.
very true- only small-medium mutts for me. both mutts were hound mixes- so some issues- hunting mostly.

ive always had rescue dogs all my life, either mini schnauzers or mutts, the weirdest one i had as a kid was a doxie/ lab mix. she was the size and shape of a doxie but the muscle of a lab and solid black. she was able to pull me on skates everywhere lol. right now i have a jrt/beagle mix who is the most laid back dog i hvae seen lol.
but if i couldnt have anymore shelties like bubs i would own bullmastiffs. i have always been a fan of the big dogs. i love bullys cause they think they are 5lbs lap dogs and just want to lay in your lap and love on you. i also love that for thier size they are couch potatos lol

She sure is.
Sophie is 8 months and is fully in her adolescence phase. You're right though, she worships the ground I walk on, and anybody elses too for that matter. lol- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

I lean towards thick or long-haired dogs.
But yes, I did toy with the idea of a pug....can't help it....I love their smashed up faces!
Barb, I think we have very similar tastes! King Charlies are so sweet and just love, love, love. Same with Papillons (at least every one I've met). I love that Pierre is our tiny little snuggle man. If we are feeling snuggle-neglected from the Shelties (doesn't happen often), Pierre is happy to nose his way onto a lap.
My hubby wanted a Mini Eskie over a Sheltie, but I convinced him (or rather, the squirming puppies did)! I think they are beautiful and sweet, but I didn't really like that they were circus dogs. For some reason, they didn't seem serious enough.
A few others I like:
Border Collies. I like a working dog very much. That intensity is awesome, I just don't have the time or space right now.
Standard Poodles. Not to give crazy haircuts too, but I've known some awesome Standard Poodles who are smart, receptive, and just amazing.
Great Dane. They are so beautiful and sweet, but they just don't live long enough. Not to mention the space issue!
That being said, I love my Shelties and am totally devoted to this breed.
If I had more room I would like to have either a Rough Collie, Aussie. I do think Corgi's are awfully cute. I know I would stick with the herding group. I have always thought the Trevurns were beautiful. I will have to say that the standard Poodle is striking in looks. But I know in my heart it will always be shelties.
