I use Iverhart Plus. It does heartworm & others as well as tapeworms. Haven't had a problem with tapes but we do get rabbits in the yard so you never know. I used Interceptor for years until one sheltie turned up HW positive after being on it.
She had a HW neg test that March & was on preventative. I got her in July & put her on Interceptor. The next April she was tested & was HW positive. I know for a fact she was eating the Interceptor. This dog never refused anything that resembled food. My vet said the makers of Interceptor wouldn't cover the HW treatment because I only had her on it from July - April. So I immediately switched all my shelties to Heartguard & later Iverhart. We did a test by giving them the Heartguard & watching them for 24 hrs. After no reaction we have done it ever since & that was about 4 years ago. Never had another HW positive either.
Maybe I had an unusual experience but I prefer the ivermectin. It is what we used a slow kill treatment on the sheltie with the HW & by her next yearly test she was negative & was ever since.

Oh the bunnies this year are coming in great numbers, so are the squirrels.
I have been watching Lil' Lady but I have her on the meds Interceptor. I about died, she was sniffing rabbit poop but I don't think she ate any. With this mild winter I swear the critters were breeding like crazy. I have to laugh at her, she shows me where the deer poop is but she nor Lucky never eat it.
What an appetizer if they would.

The most recent information is that Novartis "hopes" Interceptor and Sentinel will be available again in January 2013.
I've put mine on Heartguard with no ill effects, except for Pixie who I still have on the last of my Sentinel. Since she's prone to seizures I don't use flea and tick preventatives on her and Sentinel protects from everything except ticks. I am really hoping I can get Sentinel for her before I run out. Otherwise, I'm thinking of trying her on Revolution.

You can get singles from vet source online. Ten dollars a piece for the 10-25 lbs. Ask your vet about it.

I was reading the article on Novartis. They shut the whole plant down because they screwed human RX pills with over the counter pills for humans.
Something else must have gone to the dogs too to stop production on dog meds. Maybe the doggie pills went to the humans too. We will never know.

Oh brother! I just called the vet and they said that novartis will not be making interceptor anymore. That is their understanding about it all. I am going to call novartis and find out definitively.

Thank you all for your input. Little Girl is a normal Interceptor and Frontline user. Now without Interceptor, am I understanding that it is safe to use Frontline and the Heartguard? I didn't get to speak to the vet, only the receptionist. She is very nice, but I am sure she is just saying what she has been told and could not answer my questions.
