Itching Scratching Biting

You can call the vet and ask them how much bennedryl to give him so that he is comfortable until you can take him in. They should be able to tell you that over the phone with out seeing him. Good luck - let us know what you find out!
 
I cut the adult Benadryl pill in half and give 1/2 pill to my dogs when they need it depending on weight. Sometimes I will cut the pill to 1/4 for dogo under 20 pounds or if the problem isn't too bad. You can also buy the children's Benadryl for them. If he's really itchy, I'd do 1/2 tab once or twice a day if needed.
 
It could also be a bacterial infection. My Mom used to use the Malaseb shampoo on her cocker/beagle mix. It was recommended by the vet, but don't know if you have to have a prescription to purchase the shampoo. You have to suds them up and let it set for maybe ten minutes. It did help relieve the itching for her pup. Your vet should be able to do a scraping to check for infections.
 
We finally got Dylan to the vet to see about his itching. Vet said he's got seasonal allergys and gave him 4mg of Medrol. It worked with the very first dose! No more itching for him and he seems quite happy about that. I also got some disturbing news also while at the vet. He was checking him out all over, feeling his body, checking his teeth,etc. He then asked me how old he was. I told him the rescue group gave me age of 3. The vet then tells me that he believes he's much older, more like 7 or 8! Not that it matters but I found myself being really upset over that. All I could think about is that now I have 4 or 5 less years with him. That's a hugh difference from what I was told.

When I got home I got on the internet to get the rescue group's phone number so I could call and find out how they determined his age and to my disbelief, this rescue is under investigation and has been shut down! I'm so glad that we got Dylan outta there but now I have to wonder if anything they told me was the truth.

Dylan is VERY lucky to have found you, from the sound of it! I understand your disappointment at learning he's older, but he's probably so happy to be with you that he'll keep that puppy spirit for years. We have a 10 year-old who still thinks she's a puppy. It's great that you solved his allergy problem too!

I'm sorry that you found out this news but would you change it now? I know how it feels due to the circumstances that happened when we got our girl Zoe almost two years ago. I won't go into details here but I do understand what you mean about the potential time loss.

What rescue group did you get him from? I'm interested to know because we looked at several dogs from various groups and had some not so great feelings about a couple of them. Send me a PM if you don't want to post it on here.

I'm glad that you took Dylan to the vet and got his itchies all straightened out! Give that cutie a hug from me and the girls!
 
I'm just glad Dylan feels better. None of us knows how long we have, and heck, age is just a number anyway!!! :biggrin2:
 
I'm glad Dylan is feeling better but am sorry for all of your shocking news. I can only imagine how disappointed and betrayed you must feel.
 
Thanks everyone. Dylan is soooo much happier now that he's not itching! I swear I see him smiling :). And as far as the age thing goes, I wish we could have had him as a puppy but it really doesn't matter we love him whatever age he is. I know he's happy and content and that's all that matters.
 
Ruckus's allergies are being kept well under control. He is on a better dog food, gets bathed twice a month in emu oil shampoo and is on predisone, and benadryl as needed.
He also gets waterless shampooed with a tea tree shampoo between baths.
