After we made the commitment with the breeder, Minnie and I took a walk where we had spread Sandstorm's ashes. I cried the whole walk. Minnie still reacts to his name,, I was afraid with the new puppy I would eventually forget Sandstorm and I don't ever want to. We came home, I was fine. This new puppy we're getting was born on mother's day, my first without my mother. Sandstorm was the first dog my mother loved, and when he died, a month before she did, she was so sad. And then Colonel Underpants joined Sandstorm. This is life.

Karen, there is a whole lot of "meant to be" in your story. Trust me, you will NEVER forget Sandstorm. You will see him in all the special places in your house that were his, on the walks you take, on beautiful days, and in so many other places. I know. It doesn't get easier, and a puppy never replaces the one who was lost, but a puppy will make you smile, because you can't help it. And that will ease the pain.

No, we all know a new one does not replace the departed dog (I actually hate the word "replace" in this context) but as Ann said the new boy will brighten your lives. Think of it as paying the love for Sandstorm forward.
