I've had it with off leash dogs !!!!

dawns2shelties, the more I talk to you the more I like you. Unleashed dogs are in my top list of pet peeves concerning animals. Might even be #2 or #3. My biggest annoyance for this is at the vet's office. Off leash dogs are annoying in general, but in the vet's office they are even worse, because you never know what a dog is at the vet's for. It could be as simple as a shot or as scary as parvo!

One of these times I am seriously going to go off on somebody. I'm all about being social with the shelties, but the vet's office is NOT the place to do that! I don't even like for my dog's feet to touch the floor. :uhoh: I almost laid into some guy for allowing his pit bull puppy, that was at the vet's office because it was overtaken with FLEAS, to harass Smudge. Keep your ugly dog away from my sheltie!

I hear you Jessica I was at the vets with Gypsy and a dog there had Kennel cough really bad and the owner was letting it stroll around. A woman beside me had her puppy on the floor in front of her and I told her to pick her puppy up put it on her lap and face it the other way just like I was with Gypsy. She thanked me and said this was her first dog and she didn't know about K.C.

Simple. Pepper spray. Post a notice where people will do, announcing that since loose dogs have attacked your leashed Sheltie, you will be carrying pepper spray from now on and will spray any unleashed dog that approaches you dog.

If they call the cops, who cares? You have the law on your side, and you're spraying the dog in self defense.

I agree about the Pepper Spray, that would be my defense of choice....BUT...do you need a permit to carry it? There is also a product called "Direct Stop" that Petsmart carries and other pet supply stores too. No permit needed for that. Actual Pepper Spray might be stronger though? I don't know as I've never tried it on myself (lol).

I totally agree with your frustration. I'm sick and tired of people not leashing their dogs. Just yesterday, a woman had her little Jack Russell off lead and said "Oh...he's friendly." Not two seconds later he was lunging and trying to go after my boys!! Dogs will be DOGS.

If you have leash laws in your city I would report them and take pics of these dogs and their behavior. If you have a cell phone that can take pics it can be hidden from the other menace owners view. The local Animal Control would love to see pics with the report you file

Ah yes, I know all about off leash idiots and their dogs! I back onto an off leash area. Dogs must be next to owner and under voice control at all times - yea right! In the meantime I walk my own dogs on lead in the area, firstly because Deska does like to chase bicycles and mostly because Tully has been attacked in this area twice.

Two tactics for dealing with annoying off leash dogs. Carry a Chuckit stick that you can use as a blocker between your dog and the offensive one - and you can use it to hit the other dog to get it away (I have never had anyone complain about me hitting their dog with a chuckit). Another method is to 'body block' your dogs - putting yourself in between. That way you are turning your back on the culprits and protecting your dogs. I've seen people do this and it really is like giving the finger.

That would be so frustrating. But until the management starts enforcing their rules, it sounds like everyone will continue to let their dogs run... sounds like some fines should be in order to get everyone to start minding their Ps and Qs!
