Justus was attacked!

We were just home from agility (9:30) and spoke with the neighbor lady that was out in the driveway. Flyer and Justus were on leashes and we were walking to the front door when the neighbors pit flew by me and right on top of Justus. He had him by the neck, then the throat and would not let go. I stuck my hand in trying to find a collar, the pit wasn't wearing one. I was screaming at the top of my lungs and soon the neighbors were out there with me - I kept screaming and started to kick Ham, the pit bull. I was terrified that Justus was being hurt. Somehow Ham let go and then started toward Flyer. I don't remember what happened but I had Flyer in my arms in a nano second. I was begging that they please not let him get the puppy!

The neighbor got his dog and soon they were all back at my front door and I was crying, and Justus was scared. I felt spit and slobber all over his neck and rough, and my hand was bleeding but I could not find any torn skin or blood on Justus.

Thank God Justus seems to be alright physically. All of us are a wreck right now. I tried to comb through Justus thick ruff and the skin is too tender, he whimpers. I have put puppy and Justus in the crates with a bone and I'm going to thank God that my dogs are not hurt. I hate to think what *could* have happened.

Justus did not fight back, he has good sense. I really worry though what this has done to him. He's never been attacked before and he is a very friendly social dog. I pray he continues to be.

There will be lots to do to repair trust and confidence that my neighbors can control their dog but for one minute, if Ham had wanted to hurt Justus, he would have. He did sound furious, thankfully he didn't rip his skin or seriously bite him.

I'll go get Justus checked out tomorrow, maybe I'm missing something - but I don't think so.

I'll have to ask the neighbor for proof that their dog has had a rabies shot.

So sorry you had that frightening experience, and so thankful it wasn't worse. Please keep a close eye on Justus tonight and I do think it's a good idea to go have him checked out just in case. I know they are your neighbours, but I'd seriously consider reporting the incident in case it happens again - there will be a record.

OMG! This is so scarey! So glad you guys SEEM to be ok, but I agree that a vet visit is a good idea.
 
Oh no! That is just terrible. I can't imagine how frightening that must have been. I agree that a. Vet visit in the morning is a good idea. I hope Justus is ok. I'm glad you were able to keep Flyer safe. I think this is one of my worst fears, that another dog would attack my babies.


Hang in there, I hope you can get some sleep tonight. Please let us know how Justus is in the morning and what happens at the vet.
 
First- I am so sorry that poor Justus (and you!) just went through this... I completely know how you feel! :hugs

Second-- Make sure to report it!!! Watson was not the first that his attacker had gotten, but we were the first ones to report it. The dog was involved in another attack just 2 weeks later. Having a record is very very important. Not just for this. I don't know what the relationship is that you have with your neighbor but it's also good to make a report of vet expenses.

Check your own hand- if you reached in to grab a collar, it's possible the blood was your own... making it even more important to determine the dog's vaccination status. If you got bit, you will probably want to at least consider a tetanus shot depending on how long since your last- I ended up getting one. If the dog is not vaccinated, it will probably need to be quarantined (I had to make a report with the health department and check back after 10 days even though it was Watson that bit me and he was vaccinated, because of the law. But because of the situation, he was allowed to stay with us.)

Definitely get to the vet tomorrow. If he's whimpering at combing, there could be punctures although, Watson never did cry over any of his wounds being handled so hopefully he's just scared right now.

Thankfully it sounds like it could have been much, much worse. I am sad that poor Justus has to go through this, but it could have been really heartbreaking if the dog had grabbed Flyer- I'm glad you were able to grab the wee one.

Please post us an update on how Justus is doing in the morning!

Terrifying.

You were very brave to protect your puppy and your bigger boy against a dangerous attack from a pit bull. People have died for less in dog attacks.

Those jaws have such a tremendous force and you were fortunate that you and yours escaped alive and with relatively minor physical symptoms. Do be careful to check for punctures; these injuries can be disguised under the ruff and can become infected quickly.

It may be difficult, but I hope that you will not only consider talking with your neighbor in no uncertain terms about the attack and zero tolerance for any further violence. I do hope that you also report this incident so that it will be a matter of public record. This is obcvously an unpredictably dangerous dog, and the owners clearly lost control over it. This mustn't happen again, for your Shelties' sake and for the well being of humans and animals in your neighborhood. Animal control and/or the police need to know so that they can take steps to protect you, Justus, and Flyer.

Be vigilant.
 
Get him checked over by a vet tomorrow. Sheltie fur can hide puncture wounds easily. I have have clients who find wounds 2-3 days later when they where infected. Sorry you had th experience and hopefully Justus well be ok physically and mentally.
 
What a horrific experience! I'm so sorry that this happened to you and Justus. Thinking of you both, and praying it doesn't affect Justus :hugs
 
Oh that's awful and so frightening:(

Its a horrible experience to see your dog attacked. When Cadbury was attacked by a standard poodle it was so unexpected and sudden I just froze. Thankfully my trainer was nearby and screamed at me to drop Cadbury's lead. As soon as I did he managed to escape the poodle. He didn't run far and quickly came back to me. The moral I learned that day is, if it is safe to, drop the lead so your dog can escape its attacker should it get the chance.

Cadbury has never really been the same around dogs and will react badly sometimes when on lead. Sadly now I seem to have the bad dog because he can be so reactive:(
