limping back leg after wake up

My Roy b is just one year old, i notice there's a few time he woke up with a limping leg, but after a few second he went back to normal. Since hip dysplasia is common in this breed, should I be worry about this? or it's just his leg fall asleep?? do you guys have any experience on this?

or may be I'm just a mom who worries too much.. :rolleyes2:
 
A friend of mine has a sheltie (less than a year old) who did that. The sheltie has no problems running or jumping. She took her to the vet and got her xrayed, turned up nothing. Vet said it might be growing pains. It seems to have resolved itself anyway.
 
Given his age its probably nothing more than growing pains, a strain or even a bruise (Sadie limped for months because she'd bruised her paw) but you should have him looked at by your vet if this is an on going thing, just to be safe.

While hip dysplasia occurs some times, I don't think I'd say its common in shelties. Its more prominent in larger breeds.
 
I just went to canine massage seminar and we examined nice GS pup who had huge knot in her hind leg after running full out. No she was not limping but her muscles were very tight in some spots. If you have pup that does not get much of exercise and then runs full out for some time he might get some cramps, just like people get next day after tough workout in a gym. Just something to consider.
Of course hip problem does happen and it could be more evident at about year old.
There are some good books on T touch massage and stretching your dog avail.

I've noticed Revel has started limping a couple of times on his left front leg after he wakes up too. He then has a stretch and is sound again. A friend thinks it could be arthritis but I know he slipped when going mad in the snow a few weeks back and wondered if it could be a bruise or strain. It is interesting that this type of injury can cause a limp for this length of time.

I don't think Rob's limp sounds like hip dysplasia as with that I believe the discomfort becomes more rather than less pronounced after moving around.

We took Sadie for an x-ray a week after it happened, when it didn't seem to be improving. In total it seemed to hurt her for 4-6 weeks, but she limped on and off for a long time. Some times they get used to limping or do so for attention. :rolleyes2:
 
I had an issue with Pal and limping on and off, started at about 9 months old. I never heard him cry out in pain or anything, he just would not bear weight on it. He was on Metcam for a while and seems to be healed, was off meds and started limping again. We then did X rays and it showed up nothing. He did another course, this time six weeks Matcam and now Dasuquin (Glucosamine and Chondrotin). Now he is maintained on 1/2 tab Dasuquin, so far so good.

I lived in toronto and we do have heavy snow too, I had to make him wear shoes because the salt on the road make him hurt. he will run in the snow, and jump around with shoes on. And since the snow start, he limp after he wake up a few times. Since he walk funny in shoes, i was wondering may be that make him uncomfortable..
 
Deska has always been stiff when he gets up. Turns out it was elbow dysplasia (not common in shelties so I didnt pick it up until he was three). The bigger indicator of dysplasia was his not wanting to go far on walks and his limping back when he chased after something.

No, the salt should not affect his feet in the morning after walking him.

If you stop putting shoes on his feet they will likely toughen up and stop hurting him when he walks on salt.

I've been sick so haven't been walking my three as much, and the salt is really bothering them. This is the first time its been such a problem, the salt doesn't usually bother them.
