Low-Protein Diets???

Sable,

Thanks for our mention about not blaming myself. I'm feeling like a made a huge mistake going to the grain-free, high-protein diet, and did I allow myself to swept up in the hype. And cause damage to my pup as a result.

My breeder stuck to your basic Pro Plan and her pups have done fine, even winning points to their championships. And I decide that my pups are going do better, and look what happens! Yeh, I'm beating myself. Hard not to.

:confused2::cry:

First of all, I'm glad you found a food that you are comfortable with and that Bacca seems to be doing well. We'll all pray that the tests in January show improvement.

Meggie's breeder also feeds Pro Plan. That's what Meggie was on when I got her. The breeder has had many champions dogs over the years and currently as well. I think it's all a matter of preference.

I love the post about the dog who ate pasta and meatballs! That is the arguement I have with my dad daily. It's a hard arguement to win!

My breeder fed Pro Plan also!! I would have kept Megan on it if she would have eaten it, but she wouldn't.

I am really interested in following this thread. It is great that you were able to find a food that met your needs. I am crossing my fingers for some great results in January.

It seems like the extremes can be dangerous in either direction... the extreme high protein (EVO, Horizon Legacy, Orijen) and the super market type garabage.

Isn't that the truth with just about everything, lol? There is a lot to be said about Moderation.....:wink2: My mom used to have a saying when we were growing up, too much of anything isn't good.

Grain free!?!

I have been reading the posts about grain free, or high protein, low protein etc and am just curious about something!? Does grain free mean higher protein, and is it a certain type of high proteins that certain puppies/dogs have a hard time digesting?

My Megan is on Royal Canin Puppy 33 and the nutritional label says crude protein 33%.

I am just trying to understand all these labels and how do you know if your puppy's liver is working too hard or developing chronic issues due to the food??

My head is spinning, HELP :o

I've personally never been a fan about high protein. I just remember reading a few articles about how it can be harmful and that was enough for me. I like to feed foods that have meat as the #1 ingredient, no corn, AAFCO standards, preferably grain free, but good grains like rice is okay. I did some research on dogfoodanalysis.com and some google research. That's how I chose the dog food that I feed Bailey. I started out with wellness, then innova and now california natural. She has a sensitive stomach. That's why I've switched so many times.

Now! does seem like pretty good food. I love that it's grain free.

It doesn't *have* to mean extreme high protein. Like Barb mentioned for Now!, theirs is 24%. The TOTW variety I'm feeding right now (pacific stream) is 25%. Both of these foods are quality, grain free foods, yet don't have such high protein levels

I am in agreement, that I do not feel shelties need that higher protein percentages. If you are talking about a real working dog, sled dog,a lab that is worked as far as field events, etc. They would need a higher protein, because of the work they do.

I'll stick with what I am feeding here which is TOTW,I'm not goingto fuss messing with something, that they all like. And is good for all life stages.

I like the fact it is readily available to me.Pricing is right on point to what I can afford, and I'm still getting a food that is good for them.
