Mats behind the ears

So Shelby will get a mat behind only one of her ears and ill brush it out and it comes back the next day pretty much on the same ear. I wonder if I'm brushing it out all the way? I use feta going spray and a pin brush. Is there any other ways people use to get mats from behind the ears? To make it come out easier?
 
Thanks for that hint! Callie has been having trouble with them too, and I'd had to cut one out recently. I'll try the baby powder next time.
 
Logan also suffers from the one ear mat phenomena. I'll definitely give the baby powder a shot. Thanks for sharing!
 
Any idea what triggers the mats behind the ears? I've noticed Callie's are worse after her sister has been over to play, and wondered if that was contributing somehow.

Just curious.
 
I think it's a combination of the fine-ness of the hair (is fine-ness a word?) and oil. The baby powder helps with the oil. Callie's could have gotten worse if her and her sister were rough housing and her sister grabbed on and tangled it a bit.

Humans with (longer) fine hair also have trouble with how easily it tangles.
 
Maybe it happens from her scratching behind her ears? She doesn't have any other animals to play with so it can't be other animals. She just gets it behind her one ear. I have yet (knock on wood) to have to brush out a mat from her other ear.
 
For sure, hair texture plays a role. Indy gets matts regularly but he still has soft "puppy" fur....even though he is almost 5 years old! Bacca rarely mats, but his coat is alot coarser.

All you can do is stay on top of them. It only takes a few minutes a week to check the ears and work out the knots.

If the baby powder or cornstarch doesn't work, then take some rounded scissor and make a few cuts up towards the ear (carefully!). Then brush out again. (p.s. a mini slicker is best for this job). You are not trying to cut out the mat (i.e. with a horizontal cut), but simply to loosen it further.
